Default UK vs American ecu's

Hello all. I recently discovered a chap in Americ breaking a left hand drive 97 xk8, so now I'm wondering if the ECU or ECM would work in a UK 96/97 xk8. Any thoughts would be much appreciated? Cheers

First thing I would do is check your VCATS label in the trunk and see if the ECM model number in the USA 1997 MY is the same as yours in the UK.

Yes and thanks for the reply. Mine is LJA1410AK. Apparently this part number is hard to come by so I'm wondering what the difference will be between the UK and USA versions and if they are different, some of the components should be interchangable. I'm of the opinion they can't be too far apart.
What do you think?

The EMISSIONS requirements are different for each Country so I would guess that could be a problem.

The VCATS software version would be the /xxx AFTER the part number.(eg. LJA1410AK/xxx)
It is NOT printed on the module itself and must be read from the label in the boot or interrogate the module with PDU, WDS or IDS software.

Thanks for your reply Motorcarman.
Am I right in thinking, then, that the last 3 digits could be remapped to duplicate the last 3 digits of my own if say they were indeed different. ie emisions or am I way off base. As it is only a programed computer it must able to accept a new programe, hence remapping.
See, the emissions difference was the 1st thing I thought would or could be different but not really a problem that couldn't be sorted out.
By the way miy ECM is LJA 1410 AK/003
Thanks again for your reply and anyone else who knows about these things.

SOME early ECMs were able to be 'flash-programmed'.

Here is the TSB/Service Action we did on early cars upon a customer complaint basis.
I think WDS also had the software for this procedure as well as PDU but I don't remember.

You can select ROW or FEDERAL for the flash programming. We here in NORTH AMERICA had to choose FEDERAL.
