Default Ventilation A/C Smell

Got our 2002 convertible a year ago. One thing really gripes my wife -- that's the interior smell that I think comes from the ventilation system (it's not a wet smell from rain -- I've had convertibles before and know what that smells like!). It's kind of an "old" smell -- like what you'd find in your grandfather's clothes closet!

When we first got the car, we noticed little bits of black material being blown out of the dash vents when the A/C was on. My guess is that the trap door foam seals may have deteriorated and are coming apart. That may be part of the smell problem.

Also, I don't think our car has the cabin air filter under the cowl. Is there any form of filtering done when outside air is brought into the car? I'm not looking forward to putting up a bunch of "Frebreze" stick-ups everywhere in the car, so would appreciate any suggestions that other may have on the subject. Thanks.

Hey, thanks so much for the link. I guess I should have found it myself if I had searched the forum better (never thought to use the word "stank" in the search). Dash dis-assembly is a scary thing for me -- always worried about breaking a cover panel. However, once inside, it doesn't look like it would be a really big job. Thanks again.

Here is the Rev's video on removing the center panel.
