So I am reinstalling the heads after two intake valve seats dropped.
Put VVT on , tightened to 65 nm and then went to check retard position.
Just used a big screwdriver to rotate outer shell counter clockwise and then back. Delta is 15 degrees.
There does not seem to be any spring back as mentioned in some videos of the early VVT units.
Is something wrong?
So I talked to an independent mechanic and a dealer mechanic and they do recall the spring back on the early models but not on this variety. The summation in the engine document JJM181515/70 seems appropriate for the early version and not the later version
When the valve timing solenoids are deenergised, the coil springs in the bush carriers position the shuttle valves to connect the valve
timing units to drain. In the valve timing units, the return springs hold the ring pistons and gears in the retarded position.
When the valve timing solenoids are energised by the ECM, the solenoid plungers position the shuttle valves to direct engine oil to the valve
timing units. In the valve timing units, the oil pressure overcomes the force of the return springs and moves the gears and ring pistons to
the advanced position.
For the later type without springback it seems that the valve springs pushing up on the cams give enough resistance to push the VVT back from advanced position when rpm drops.
Then I ground down that tool to fit the opening of the VVT. And set it to full retard position.
