Is the water pump for the 4.0 the same as the 4.2?

I can't say for sure but the parts manual shows only one part number for all years and NA and SC versions.

Not sure, but a mechanic told me that the pump design was updated at some point. My guess is that they are the same... guess...

I think they updated the impellers on them.
