Having had an MOT on my car recently, it was indicated as an advisory that my two rear tyres were wearing on the outside edges. 2.70 and 2.80. Centre measurements were 4.30 on both tyres and inside edge were 3.00. As I am going to undertake a number of miles this year, I decided to change them and brought Dunlop SP Sportmaxx tyres. It was suggested that I have the wheels aligned to. I had this undertaken at another garage location and the results were as follows:

The garage that under took the alignment indicated that the ‘red’ readings was due to the age of the car and mileage and that they couldn’t be adjusted.
Should I be concerned?

 

It can be corrected. Since it's the rear, you probably have failing rear mounts and or sagging springs. I would check those first. Or, if you would rather correct it by adjusting the camber, you can fit half-shaft spacers. There's a thread of mine in which we calculated the spacer thickness I would need to correct rear camber on my lowered car.

 

inside and outside edges not much different 2.8 and 3 but the centre is less worn....You have been running underinflated . up the tyre pressure by about 3 psi and save your money

 

Very odd, check my tyres once a month, never have to inflate them. So can’t except the reason for this wear is because the tyres are under inflated.
There must be another reason.

 

Turn your brain on ..if you increase the pressure you wili even the wear for your use /driving style and roads its too low/
Wide tyres are more sensitive to pressure than narrow ones ..who says you gauge is accurate ?

 

When I first bought my 2002 XKR I inflated the tires per the owners manual. I ended up with very distinct signs of over inflation which is too much wear in the tread middle and much less wear on both edges. Letting out a few psi gave me even wear.

Point being, these cars are very sensitive to tire pressure. Optimal pressure can vary depending on the tire compound and manufacturer. Paying attention to how the tires are wearing can yield some interesting and actionable information.
