Default Kelly Blue book value 8K.

Kelly Blue book puts the value of this car in good condition at a private party sell, high end value arount 8 grand.

At say you get the car for 4K you have a 4k cushion to play with. If you are a car enthusiast and want a high performance classic car the it may make sense. If you are buying the car to make money on, not so such a hot idea.

I think it would be worth restoring if you want a XKR Jaguar enjoy working on cars. If this car has been outside for six years and not running, well you know its gonna be bad.

one thing to consider is that we are considering values now, not the future. also need to add in if something would be nice to own and use. in the future regardless of where values go, there will be less of particular specimens.

let's say that this particular specimen is acquired for x and y is spent where x+y is 5000 USD more than it is worth. my friend has a model train hobby that never makes economic sense. i maintain mine and use it knowing that it is a net loss and probably less likely to be valuable in excess of cost as it is a regular XK8. now if we are ever speaking of a specimen that has potential high or very high value or massive maintenance cost where the delta is a real discussion, then perhaps the arguments change unless disposable income is high enough that it does not matter much.

if the original poster really wants the car and knows that he will enjoy it a couple thousand UDS loss is no more ridiculous than someone who likes to own a boat or work with model trains. plus it might be fun to overhaul a car.

Sounds like a fun car but I probably wouldnt go that way, when you add up price of the kit (2000) a decent LSx motor and transmision
(2000) it is more than just pulling out the Jag engine and fixing/replacing it and I have had a couple LSx cars already,
be fun to try something different and the exhaust note of the Jag V8 is pretty sexy and I am honestly not looking for a racecar just a cool weekend driver.

Fascinating.

^^ Well put.
I doubt many of us run an XK* in the hope that it may one day make us rich.

The pleasure of ownership is priceless for me.

Can't tell you how much money I've "lost" on my hobby of British sports cars (mainly 'cause I don't know and don't want to!). I can tell you that I sold my last bass boat because I sat down one day and figured out how much that one bass that I caught each year cost me!

I know we paid more for our XK8 than KBB or anyone else would price it. But it's a local car, I met the owner and trust him, and he had extensive maintenance records, especially considering it had less than 17k on the clock!

Would like to thank everyone for your input!
Finally in Dallas for work and went to see car,,apparently pictures were taken a very very long time ago,,
car went thru a hail storm after that and has dents over entire hood and trunk area,,owner had told me
it ran 5 years ago,his wife told me its been much longer than that possibly 7-8 years,
owner will only sell on the condition engine is not started,
was running rough when they parked it with 80k miles,
she has no idea if they did timing chains, says engine may have been changed,
there were cloths hung under windshield to catch the green goo. Car was covered in dust and dirt.
Top and windows did not work when it was parked
Only spoke to wife, owner too sick to come out, he can no longer drive,
she says if it doesnt sell for 5500 her son will buy it for $5k,
he is a mechanic and can fix it apparently even though they have no idea whats wrong.
She says they think its just a grounding issue.
Okay..
Had it not had the hail damage I may have gone to 4000 but with the damage and sitting for
that long and him not wanting car started Im gonna pass.
Right down the street from that one is a gorgeous 2001 with 64,000 miles in perfect shape and running great for 9k
only problem is its black .
I Gotta have red.. :-)
Ill keep looking though and will ask your advice once again when I find one.
Thanks!

Bullet dodged. Fantastic vehicle. $5500 for a nonfunctional mystery grab bag of broken engine parts. With luck (bad luck), the transmission is munged too.

Bonus, hail damage and covered with goo.

Wonder what value they expected they were selling?

Good luck in your search.

Default Good decision to pass on this car

Well done going to Dallas and seeing the car.... No way with what you described. Way too many problems, known and unknown, for USD5k. Best decision to walk away. There are better examples out there.

My 1999 XK8 was in storage for two years but at least the owner had a large garage and he knew it did run before being parked up. With his personal mechanic we put a little diesel oil in the bores before trying to fire it up for the first time.

If owners aren’t going to let you “play” with a non runner, at least turn the crank, then walk away. I previously looked at a Land Rover Disco with head gasket leak, and the female owner wouldn’t let me touch the engine! I could fix it, but what else was I letting myself in for. So I walked away without making an offer.

Does not seem clear to me that this car actually has ANY residual value at all, i.e. worth paying anything for it. It seems like it would take more to fix it than finding a working car of the same vintage. Ran into a local car like that when I was initially looking for an XK8. Halfway through the "inspection", I realized that there was no price I was willing to pay to get that particular car in my garage. Same trick though, bringing people in with years-old pictures that bore no resemblance to the current condition. Good on you for walking away.

Oof. Gonna go out on a limb and say they're BSing that the son is gonna buy it for 5k. Selling it on the condition that you don't try to start it is a bizarre request.

Glad you dodged a bullet, and I concur with the above to buy a later model. You can avoid all of the early messes.

Yes. Or perhaps he hates his son.

I was actually just looking at it as a fun weekend project,if it was as nice as the pics but not in the shape its in.
I am looking for a newer one but a 2010+ 5.0 XKR vert,,
problem is I want red and have seen very very few red XKRs with the 5.0
90% of the ones I find, low milage, nice shape are black on black..

It's just because with black, we're always cleaning it, no time to drive. One short shower makes it look like a depressed Jackson Pollock's car.

Swore I'd never do this again, but then you see it all black and shiny... ... and not out in any hailstorms.

Thanks to all of you for the helpful input,
Still looking just not in a big hurry, may take me a while but think Im gonna hold out for a 5.0 XKR convertible.
Prices are going down and the lure of 500+hp is too great. :-)
This is my current daily driver,, this is the color I would want to put on the XKR..
:-)

May be the only XKR ever repainted Ford race red
but I will be happy as can be if I can swing it.
