My wife and I talked about selling the Jag. I let her know if the Jaguar was gone I would finally have time for that mid-life affair my friends are all taking about.

Yes, but would replace with either a 2006 Victory edition, or a 2007 (or newer) XKR.

 

I'd agree. A 2007 from my 2002 would be a great upgrade...even though I'd rather have a 2010 xkr...lol

 

I pretty much have always gotten "attached" to the cars I have owned. Longest kept were a 1995 Corvette (14 years) and a 1970 Roadrunner (13 years). My "typical" ownership's have been 7 to 10 years. It is always the wife who starts pushing me to think of getting a replacement vehicle after about 5 years or so. I am just past 8 years on the Jaguar and, as far as I am concerned, can live with this car forever given the pretty modest mileage I put on every year. Vehicles that might tempt me are typically priced beyond what I would care to spend.

After working on a few British cars in my time I just would never own one....then this car came along, neglected but not abused, needing someone to take care of it...the former owner had it since new, and he wanted it to go to someone who could appreciate it...and since I was there he talked me into buying it at a good price for us both...well....i fell in love...really....since I have had it I put 50% of the purchase price into neglected and defective items....and it gives me a leak or lumpy idle or misfire/cel now and then...and when it runs right the world is somehow better. So no, i am not going to get rid of this things unless it implodes, which it may some day.

Its been a joy to fix, parts are cheaper than any other car I can imagine, even a Miata....labor, well that is me and my son. And when the fix goes well it's a very nice feeling, and it's a learning curve to repair this car, thankfully there is youtube and this forum.

It is the funkiest in terms of design and build quality, wires here and there hoses that are not needed, sensors that fail, and it won't work with any of the two scanners I bought for it...but it's a keeper....I love the way it drives, and I have two other cars that are far more engaging and yet I choose to take the Jag whenever I can, go figure?

And in the end it's about how you FEEL about things that matters, I am smiling.

 

Since I've had this '97 XK8 convertible for 4 years, and just passed MOT for a 5th year, I'd definitely keep her.

Am even thinking of acquiring an additional X100 XKR convertible as a second car they are really becoming scarce...

Not by choice. The few cars I'd rather have are all well beyond my budget, most well beyond my wildest dreams, such as Jaguar XJ13, Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso, Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, etc. I feel very lucky to have my XK8 and hope to keep it for life.

As to insurance, mine (including wife's) is $300/month but that's for my Jag, Land Rover LR3, 4x4 pickup truck, and another car , as well as for my home in the country.

 

No way, I just can not see anything that matches the look of the x100. The shape of my hard top xkr still makes me smile when I walk up to it. I would rather add to the car collection than part with it.
Thankfully I am in a place where I can keep it- also lessons learned from previous cars I have had and sold regretfully, and are now worth a lot more if I were to replace.

 

There's a part of me that would like to swap to an Aston Martin, for a manual gearbox, but I give up the hatch back and trunk space. There's a part of me that would like to go to a 911 for the handling.

But realistically, the cost to own with the 4.2L V8 just makes a lot of head sense over those other two. The Jaguar also has better haul capacity.

The only likely scenario, would be to sell/trade for an XKR or XK in a different exterior color.

I'd be more likely to go the other way, junk a non Jaguar, and get a X100. It is just a pity they didn't offer manual gearboxes on the X100 or X150.

 

For the heck of it I checked out my local Craigslist for XK's the other day, as well as eBay for DB7's. 'Decided neither was as pretty as my '05 seafrost/tan XK8 'vert. 'Did spot an '07 XK with the newer front for $11,000, which seems like a bargain.

I was sitting in my car the other day, parked on Worth Avenue (the Rodeo Drive of Palm Beach), and a guy comes up to me, says his wife loves my car, and starts asking questions about it (e.g what year is it, how many miles, is it reliable, etc). Now, this is a street where exotics easily outnumber Toyotas, and they're curious about my car! 'Makes you realize what bang for the buck they have.

Unless you are going to be out on the water just about every day RENT!!!
Boats are far from an investment!!! They are hulls in the water you throw money into!!! I know I have owned 2 of them, on both I lost over 50% of my investment. RENT!!!!! Its the only way to go and its a whole lot cheaper in the long run!!!! Dont have to pay for storage, or take up your room for storage, no maintenance issues or cost, Trust me a Jag is far cheaper to own.

'Boat' and 'investment' can't be in the same sentence. As 'investments' go, they fit between planes and horses, or maybe after the latter.

 

No more boats for me. I have friends with boats. Just chip in for gas. My XK8 pulled it pretty good though. I welded the hitch to the 3rd member on the diff and aired up the back tires to 120lbs.

 

my family grew up with a few boston whalers. they were always great, low maintenance boats. OM28V what an awesome pic!!! makes me want a bigger boat now!!!

 

I would sell it for a Aston martin DBS or Vanquish. Nothing else
