Default Xenon light repair (leveling motor)

I have a 2006 XK8 Victory Edition convertible. When I was at the dealer for another problem, they showed me that the leveling motor on the passenger side was not working. The service manager told me it could only be fixed by replacing the entire headlight module. A $1500 part. Looking at parts lists, the motor is listed separately at about $130. Needless to say, I would rather just buy the motor if it could be replaced.

I realize the assembly could be such that the stepper motor cannot be removed. Has anyone had experience with this assembly? Did they make a change in 2005 that might have made the repair impossible?

Thanks for any help.

I can't answer your question about the motor, but are you sure that the motor is the problem? There are sensors in the two left wheel wells that tell the motor when to move. If one of those sensors is bad, or if the link that connects it to the suspension is broken, the motor won't move.

Although now that I think about it, that would affect both headlights, not just one.

For a while I lamented not getting a newer XK with the 4.2. But now I'm kinda glad I didn't. The newer ones have so many more bells and whistles that can go wrong...Adaptive Speed/Cruise Control, Headrests with motors, Self Leveling Headlights, Heated Windscreens, Heated mirrors, to name a few of the things my 00MY doesn't have. The 4.2 and 6spd auto would be nice though.

The difference between my 97 XK8 and 05 XKR is amazing. The 97 feels and drives like a muscle car... floor it, and it takes off after a half second or two. The 05 has instant power. I still like the 97 tons, but as soon as I get the 05 3 gauge cluster for my XKR and send out my 97 wood to British Autowood, I'll let the XK8 go with the original 05 wood and a Garmin nav unit, which should help sell it.

Yes, Reverend Sam, they demonstrated that the drivers side lamp does dip and reset on turning on and the passengers side does not. When I got home I checked the fuse in case that was the problem. It was OK but since it seems to control the lights as well as the motor it couldn't be that anyway.

Do any of the technicians on here have an answer to my main question, can just the motor be replaced?

Thanks for any help or insight.
