Thanks for replying. Question: Of the actuators on this page, are only the real Jaguar xk8 one appropriate for my car?

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dca...Display%3A4.0L

As to doing it myself, I'll watch some videos and see how hard it looks to do.

Much appreciated!

M.,
Michaelh had a good point: FYI be aware of the 2 different beeps.

1) normal system armed beep.
2) longer more annoying sounding beep = warning somethings not right (like door open, door not locked)

QUESTION TO ALL for Mysteris:

I can't remember. Do our cars use a separate solenoid plunger like the XJ6 did (XK8 replacement cost about $25 each as listed); or is the solenoid motor built into the door latch itself? (Cost $130+. . .).

When looking for an XK8 door lock actuator both come up. He'll, if i can't remember the answer after being inside the door a hundred times, I can only imagine how confusing it is to Msterieus.

Thanks,

John

It's a normal beep sound. I'm still hoping for some advice about which actuators I'd need to buy, because even if I didn't do the work myself, I might want to invest in actuators, IF they cost under $100 each (as opposed to the $350 apiece quoted by the mechanic). In fact, one ebay seller of a used Jag actuator just offered me one for $88.

Thanks to anyone who can help me with this!

Maybe copy question from my previous post above and post the actuator question separately?

I'm afraid its so buried in this string it will be overlooked.

I guess it's a moot point. I just did a bit of research, and of the actuators I asked about only the used Jag ones would work. Meanwhile, the mechanic I just used told me that labor alone would cost over $800! (Almost 2 hours per door, he said.) So I'd better look further into doing it myself or forget about it.

I just looked again. The diagram in the parts catalog is pretty clear. The actuator is embedded in the door lock.

Used, not too bad. Here's the part # and a ebay listing:

Jaguar OEM 98-06 Xj8 Front Door-door Lock Kit GJA1081DM for sale online | eBay
https://www.ebay.com/p/1322093653

Since the part # matches identically don't worry about XJ in the title. The cars share many parts, never use identical part # for different things.

Then why are actuators also sold separately, as shown in the ebay link I posted above? Is it not possible (or too difficult) to embed them in the lock?

Also, the kit you cited is described as fitting any XK between 2003 and 2006. I have a '98.

These are the original part numbers that fit the 97-06 XK8 and may also be used in other models:
Click the links for ebay listings.

GJA1081DM Left Side
https://www.ebay.com/p/1322093653 (as mentioned by Johnken)

GJA1080FK (last letter may be different but same part) Right Side
https://ebay.to/2JNwzSi

Rather than a $200 an hour mechanic, I think most auto body shops should be able to do this for much less.

M., you didn't realize, the link you posted is for the same thing in my link.

You don't recognize it but the photos are of the combined lock, lock switch, and actuator.

I'll try to post the part numbers for you next.

here's the parts under door latch.
Deadlock is a feature that prevents the door from opening with the inside handles (their breaks window reaches inside - bad luck ha ha).

I'm stll a tad confused. Do I need the entire kit, or just the actuator? On my link, there may have been a kit, but there also were just the actuators. E.g. this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Jaguar-XK8-...E/402345700502

That's the one I linked to. That's the part that operates the locks. The kit you linked to at carparts.com is a generic aftermarket kit that is not a direct replacement for what you have - don't buy that one. If both your actuators have truly failed, then what you need is what I and Johnken linked to in #29 above. Then take them to a body shop for installation if it's more than you want to tackle yourself.

In # 29, the first link goes to something titled, "Jaguar OEM 98-06 Xj8 Front Door-door Lock Kit GJA1081DM." There are 2 pictures - one looks like the actuator; not sure about the other one.

The second link indeed shows an actuator like those I saw. So, OK, I just need 2 actuators. You think a body shop would be more appropriate than a mechanic? I'll see if a body shop can do it cheaper than $800 (!). Thanks much.

Yes, body shops do this type of thing all day long and typically have a lower hourly rate. Just find one that knows Jags. $800 seems like a lot given the time required.

2000 XKR

Where is the locking relay? And how does one test it before disassembling the doors.
I have the same problem:
The key FOB functions:
  • Lights button will flash headlights check
  • Trunk release check
  • Door lock activates security system check
  • Door lock activates door lock activators (L&R) fail
(I am missing the door key, and need to source one somewhere)

Before you do anything else, open and close both doors, then perform the window reset procedure on both windows. Then try your key fob again. This is especially important if your car is a convertible....

Thanks for the quick reply?

Sounds like good advice... where is the door/ window procedure outlined?

In the manual?

Window reset procedure:

Start the engine and leave the transmission in Park.

On the drivers side switch panel on the drivers door arm rest, hold the window switch button down until the window lowers all the way and do not release the switch button until you hear an audible "click" from the window motor.

Then do the same with the passenger side switch panel on the passenger door arm rest....
