Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone here might be able to help me out, since I haven’t found any existing thread on this specific issue.
On my XK8 (2001), when the lever is in D, I can’t move it over to the left side into “manual mode.” After taking a closer look, I noticed that the ball that goes into the top part of the plastic piece is not lined up with the lower ball that sits in the lower part of the plastic.
Because of this misalignment, the lever simply won’t slide across. I’ve tried adjusting it from the top, but that hasn’t solved the issue – the two ***** just don’t line up properly no matter what I do.
Has anyone here run into this problem before, or know what the fix is? Could it be something worn or broken inside the mechanism, or am I missing an adjustment point elsewhere?
Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,

I saw this a lot when I worked at the Jaguar dealer and people or used car dealers got cars from auction lots.
The car battery would die and they did not know how to release the selector lever from PARK so they just PULLED VERY HARD AND FAST out of park.
Then they could get the car rolled back into an aisle to get jump cables on the battery.
The plastic selector lever house would crack/split and move through the gears without the lock.
Most times the lever would bend slightly and we would have to replace the housing and lever as well as a few other damaged components.
Check all the housing parts for damage.
You might save time by finding a good/used selector lever and housing complete.

Useful to check other forums that use same or similar box eg X308. Following link includes pics, discussion, repair amd replacement . . .

Just as [motorcarman] suggests, my X308 Sport, despite being immaculate in all other respects, came from ham-fisted auction gorillas with "broken gearbox".
Once correctly diagnosed (brake lights working only intermittently), DIY repair/replacement was both straightforward and inexpensive.
Cheers,
