Default XK8 Tool Kit?

A good friend of mine has a beautiful 1996 XJ6. There is a place on the passenger side of the engine bay where a small tool kit would be situated.
Any one know if the XK8 has such an item. I am not talking about the jack, etc in the trunk(ok, boot for nonSoutherners) under the spare tire.

Found this in the battery compartment of the 2006 XKR--small kit with some spares and spanners.

Default Tool Kit

I checked the same space in my 2001 XKR convertible and there was no sign of the tool kit which sits over the fuse box. The 2001 was also missing the foam spacers around the corners of spare tire compartment and the second level cover for the spare. My guess is that some previous owner may have pulled the tool kit and cover for whatever reason and not replaced them.

I checked the manuals which came with the 2001 (short version) and 2006 XKRs (long version). I didn't find a reference to a small tool kit of the sort which i found in the battery compartment of the 2006 XKR in either. There were references in the long version manual to and even pictures of Jaguar certified first aid kits (required in Belgium per manual) and fire extinguishers (required in Japan per manual) either which could be supplied by the dealer. The long version also described in some detail the operation of the tire changing tool kit with pictures showing contents and location of the kit under the spare. The abbreviated version of XK manual which came with the 2001 assumed that the operator could figure out the location and function of the spare and changing tools on his or her own.

Either the tool kit which came with the 2006 XKR (Pliers, drivers, spanners and spare bulbs) was considered to be a trifle not worthy of special mention in the manual or a lagniappe for the customer to be discovered on the occasion of their first inspection of the battery compartment.

Curious whether the kit has shown up in other XK8/XKRs

Wow! I just learned a new word!

Definition of lagniappe :a small gift given to a customer by a merchant at the time of a purchase; broadly :something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure.

Looked by the battery in my '04 . No tools. Black box with replacement fuses but that is it.

Maybe the xk8 doesn't need a tool kit I don't have anything like that in mine.

hey JRabbit,

That a cool little kit and a perfect spot for it.
Does the kit have a part # anywhere on it?
Cheers,

More likely that the factory didn't trust XK8 drivers with tools or other sharpies around the car

Looks aftermarket to me. You can see the detents where the lid would go and the shape doesn't match the fuse box lid shape. Good idea and a good spot for a emergency tool kit though.

Perhaps aftermarket but those open ended metric wrenches are stamped Jaguar. Any other 2006 MY owners have this kit?

Default No Part numbers

I pulled the kit this morning--it is a solid foam (urethane) tray which was attached to the lid of the fuse box using a double stick tape and a velcro strap. I couldn't find any part numbers on the tray, but the tools each have "Jaguar" stamped, molded or engraved on them. What I thought was a nut-driver is in fact, an extremely thin pencil style "tyre pressure" gauge. Leaves only one nut driver on board.

Default E-Bay

Just noticed that there is a tool kit just like the one in the picture which is being offered on e-bay with "buy-it-now" price of $199. The ad says that it is from an XJ Sovereign.

I believe the tool kit shown is from a X308. The XK8 and XKR do not require a tool kit.

When you buy some jumper cables, many times they come in a clear plastic zip up bag. Easy to put some tools in and you can see them without digging. I put my bag in the drivers side space at the back of my trunk (hah, I'm a northerner) that has the webbing across it. Fits perfectly, and the tools stay greasy in the bag and not my truck.

I'd be a little nervous with those tools bouncing around in the battery compartment should the restraints fail.
