Default XKR 2002 Chain Tensioners

Hi,

I've just purchased a 2002 xkr with 131k on the clock and impeccably looked after.

I just need to know if the chain tensioners on this model are metal or plastic and if they should be replaced? I am quite mechanically minded and service my Ducatis myself. Is there anyway of visually inspecting the tensioners and if so is it a tricky job?

I also understand the Ford Lincoln tensioners are the same as the Jag ones.

Can anyone please advise?

Thanks.

Its possible that your car already has the latest tensioners, but the only way to be sure is remove one of the cam covers and have a look - if you service your Ducati you won't have any problem doing this yourself.

This thread discusses the options:-

Engines built after 8/13 2001 have the updated tensioners. I read last week that the engine serial number is stamped on the left side of the engine, but I forget the exact location. If in doubt remove the right cam cover as it's easier.

Do not go by the car build date.

That's Nov 8th 2001 14:05 I believe, changeover was August 13, 2001 so you should be good BUT it's best to check just in case.

Thanks for the help.

If I take of the cam cover to visually check will I need new gaskets/seals etc or is it just a case of off-check-back on?

Thanks.

I read here:

https://xks.com/files/images/2011/7/...-1997-2006.pdf

that the engine number is year, month, day, hour and minute going from left to right in pairs.

So according to that pb0111081405 would be 8th of November 2001 at five past two.

From RJ237 then, this is after the tensioner update on 8/13/2001

Congrats on the new arrival.

Best to replace both the cover gasket and the plug seals as they'll most likely have gone hard by now.
