Default XKR engine seized

Been offered a 2003 4.2 XKR coupe. The engine has seized. It was at about 70mph that the engine suddenly made a noise and seized, it may have been low on oil. Dipstick shows oil slightly below low level. I have tried the starter motor and it will not turn over. Is this worth investigating? At this time I have no idea if the engine has burst. It has 90000 miles recorded and has stood since 2010. It has Brembo's so I assume that the disks and calipers will need attention, good 20 inch wheels, new tyres required plus unknowns. Is the cost of sorting it out worth more than the car?

Chrisipj,
It would depend on how much the car is and how confident you are at tackling the job itself. It could turn out to be a very expensive white elephant though the cost would be reduced for the DIYer.
Before you decide, you could also price up a replacement engine using the original as part ex, that may save money in the end.
The remaining work could easily be tackled at home in order to keep the costs down.
For me personally, I would look at all options first before parting with my hard earned. Just my opinion, hope it helps.

Welcome to the Forum.

I've moved your post to the XJR section (I'm assuming it's an X308).
Personally I would run away unless they're asking next to nothing.

I agree, but the question then is "What is dirt cheap"?

Well, bearing in mind someone just mentioned a PistonHeads ad for a runner at 6K ish and you don't know what else blew up when the engine seized I'd say the car is scrap - so what would Dan Dan the Scrapyard Man give for it?

Apart from the cost of stripping / rebuilding the existing engine or sourcing a replacement engine, almost three years standing since the incident won't have done suspension, tyres, exhaust or electrics any good. Recommissioning the vehicle will add considerably to the cost.

The value of a running 2003 XKR (in the UK) has nearly halved in this time. You have to ask the question why it was left to stand for so long without being repaired.

It's a buyer's market here at the moment and some very good 4.2 models can be found at low money.

If the purchase price is low enough, breaking it appears the best way to go.

Yes I agree, part of the decision is that I have agreed to help clear the car as the owner is ill. The usual temptation to buy arises but I think the best answer may be Ebay, probably worth more for parts but I do not want to be involved in keeping the remains.

If you already had an XK it MIGHT be worth buying it as a parts donor but even then I'd think carefully.
If you do put it on EBay let us know what it makes.

Hi,
A 2003 XKR in reasonable condition in the uk (in my opinion) is worth £6,000-9,000 depending on condition.
To rebuild/replace an engine for this car, could well cost in excess of£5,000 plus all the other items.

So in (my opinion) A good purchase for £1500ish, Personally id walk away unless it is cheap.

You seem to be quoting (your opinion) on the low side!

All depending on what is fitted to the car, the wheels could be worth £1000+ alone!

But best left for a dealer who would have access to the parts + knowledge to fit and able to sell it on for £9 to 12k, according to condition!

Just a quick opinion.
I'm a XJR owner, never had an XK.
As the road tax for post 2006 cars is almost double for pre 2006, I expect the later cars will be depressed in value quite soon. This may affect the values of our older cars.

I can't see the point in taking so much risk. There are plenty of cars available in the UK, and many specialists that can maintain them without incurring main-dealer costs.

Be patient. Why buy so much hassle?

However, there is a 'recycling' operation in Darlington that has very good reputation on these pages. I have used this company, but am not connected with it, just a satisfied customer

Contact Dave, he may be able to give you a price for, and actually have, a suitable engine.

Good luck , whatever you decide

Hi Stumpy
I was giving my opinion on a purchase price of a 2003 XKR that had a blown engine and the potential to have any number of other problems. the car had been stored for a number of years. I was also giving this opinion to a prospective purchaser.
At present ebay has plenty of XKR 2003 models in good order on sale for arround £8,000 and upwards. Im sure the value of the car is worth more in scrap, but lets hope it finds a good home.

Sounds like it could be a good purchase for XKRacer, if he still has the necessary parts from his CAT B, and the price is right

Hi
Ill only respond once. I joined the American jaguar forum as in my opinion in the main responses from uk forum members are not constructive and choose to focus on negativity.

I responded to a thread and gave my opinion on what I thought was a price for a buyer to purchase a vehicle. I then looked on ebay and saw several cars in the region of £8,000 and upwards.

I only respond to threads to be helpful and proactive. im sure most forum members would prefer the forum to be kept as such.

Best Wishes

Hi Steve

Is that not what we've done, responded, and given an opinion.
