I was driving through a tunnel in PA recently and wanted to see what the car's roar sounded like in that enclosure (too many episodes of Top Gear - lol). So, cruising along at around 70mph, I dropped the tranny into neutral and hit the gas. The revs rose amazingly fast (REALLY fast!), but as soon as they went past about 3000 to 3500, the engine revs started breaking up. I did it twice - same result - probably never went above 4500 rpm. It almost sounded as if the rev limiter was kicking in - but at revs "that" low?

Anyway, I just remembered to try it again while sitting in the driveway. Engine was warm; I even turned the DSC off just in case; and I got the same exact result.

In every other sense the engine seems to run great. It "does" do that little hesitation thing when stomped, but within a second I'm already starting to sweat about my next braking point.

The revving thing may be normal because of the Drive-by-Wire system or some ECM programming, but it still seems odd.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Yes! The car has a rev limiter it will not go over 2500/3000rpm in “P” & “N”.

 

In neutral or park if you floor the accelerator pedal the rev limiter does prevent free revving of the motor. A quick blip of the pedal is ok, but holding it down activates the limiter.

Not a revving issue with my car, but I can tell you that when I shift into neutral while the car is moving (down a hill, wanting to rev, whatever), I immediately get a "transmission fault" message and the gearbox goes into limp home mode. Pull over, turn off the car, restart and all is back to normal. Just tried it twice, won't do it again.

My car's TCM / ECM don't like it when the wheels are spinning, the engine is spinning and the gearbox is in neutral. The computer must find these to be conflicting signals and assumes there's some kind of problem (other than me being a jackass).

Today’s cars are not your parents car they are dependent on computers to tell you what is normal and going downhill in “N” and revving the engine is not normal. Except when you are in a tunnel with lots of horsepower and a cool exhaust system. I have a 93 Silverado 350 with an exhaust system that rocks the house. I love it!
