Default ZF 5HP24 Fluid Change and Failures Poll

I got into another discussion on ATF changes on the XJ8/R forum and thought I would post the same question on the XK8/R forum.

This subject has been discussed many times and may well never have a resolution but here goes.

For those that have experienced a failure of the XJ8/XK8 ZF 5HP24 transmission at what mileage did it fail? What was the history of any service on the transmission, as in ATF drain/refill?

My first car, a '00 XK8 had a transmission failure at 82k miles with no record of any drain/refill and I had complete records.

Thanks for any input.

Why not expand to existing good transmissions?

Zero failure, 131k mi, x3 drain refills starting at 112k mi.

Excellent suggestion!

Why doesn't anyone that serviced their transmission and it is still functioning respond also.

Drain and refill about 50K due to internal high heat sensor malfunction.
Knocking on wood, no problems at 75K and counting 1999 coupe.

Was the temp sensor replaced? If so, how?

Tom,
You have a good idea; however, I would like to know how many are out and running that had not had any failures or fluid changes as well. Please post your results.

My transmission was serviced @ 107,000mi and the failure was at 113,000mi. Also the repair shop stated that the fluid change had nothing to do with the failure.

My transmission was rebuilt at 113k miles after it was reportedly shifting funny and making some noise. I have no service records other than Jaguar service listed on the CarFax. The PO had the car from 107k thru 120k. I bought the car at 120k.

Dan R, the dealer did the replacement. Not really sure what the procedure is but I would assume it is internal sensor. Otherwise I would not have had them do the flush and fill on the tranny.

I am afraid to admit it...123,000 miles and counting...no fluid change. I found out late in the game that I could change the fluid and figure if the damage is done...its done.

Wish me luck....

Had it flushed and fluid replaced at 28,000. I'm at 55,000 now with no problems.

85000 miles, no fluid change that I am aware of.
No service needed or any problems yet. Will do a fluid change this spring though.

Cheers, Jarle

Default ZF 5HP24 Fluid Change and Failures Poll

I just purchased my 97 XK8 with 83,000 mis. No service records. I drained the trans to make sure no water was present (flood title). No water, just fairly dirty what I have to surmise is original fluid. Upon learning that genuine LT71114 fluid runs from $40-60 a qt from Jaguar, I drained and refilled 4 times with Mobil 1 ATF @ $8 a qt. Changed the filter also. The experienced parts guy at O'Reilly said Mobil 1 is the only synthetic he stocks in quantity because it is the only ATF local trans shops use in Jags, BMW's, Benz etc.. It is my understanding that the same ZF LT71114 is supplied to the OEM's for repackaging, with Jag $$$, Audi $$, and VW $. If this is true, I might have gone with the VW versision at $19 a quart for two reasons: Compatibilty, and the Mobil 1 smells terrible. Almost as bad a old gear oil. Its' hard not to make a mess when servicing this trans. Anyway, I've put about a 100 miles on it so far and it drives and shifts great. Good idea on the poll, by the way.

2000 xj8 VDP, purchased with no service history. trans 1st gearblew around 105k (forgot exactly) on original oil. Gave so symptoms of failing untill it failed. I was getting a restricted performance for a lil while before it happened if thats worth anything.

Changed fluid and filter at 60k, more for peace of mind, rather than anything else. Filter and gasket was about $65 at the dealer and I sourced the fluid at a VW dealer, after extensive research - $17 per qt. Was going to go with the Castrol universal, but chickened out!

Fluid and filter @ 65,000, now have 70k no problems. Independent Mercedes tech did it for about $300 with Esso fluid.
Sorry for the late reply, just browsing through old threads.

Filter? Or do you mean screen? The service tech at the Jag dealer insisted there wasn't exactly a filter in there, as one would expect with most auto transmissions.

I bought mine with about 66k, had Jaguar check it out and do fluid changes. Ask about trans and they told me it what a sealed unit and never needed changing. Then the tech said it should be changed every 100K. Well it failed @ 107K, so I'd say every 60 is probably a good idea. But I wouldn't go to Jag, they want $700.00 to change it.

Seven bills??

The filter kit is only seventy-some odd bucks at NAPA. Uhm, yeah - I think it's time to find a lift and do that job myself!
