I filed a flat so I could center punch for the drilled hole. I drilled 1/64" under, then 1/4" finished size and had a nice tight slip fit.

I filed a flat on the end of the threaded rod so I could center punch for the cross hole. I drilled thru with a 15/64" bit 1st then 1/4" and it gave me a nice tight slip fit for the dowel
