Rosemary,
Here's another link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...stuck-p-61551/ take a look at the video and you can see the bolts there.
Fingers crossed it might still be an easy fix.

Thanks for the code and yes it is very rare. The D4 switches mentioned in the code description are located in the shifter base in the console. These have been reported to fail once in a while.
So after checking the bolts I would test the shifter output. Dealer should be able to do that.

Thank you all again - will check in with the shop this morning and see if there is any progress.
I am confussed - I can understand why this linkage is a factor in not allowing to shift from neutral - but why would it disable the car from starting?
I can understant the codes and not starting due to a bad battery - but to not start to be a cable to the linkage of a transmission setting just doesnt' make sense.
I'd rather not have it be this switch... and I will have the shop check the linkage bolts - I'll post the next exchange in this ongoing saga (the video was GREAT! - if I ever get brave enough to slide under- I did inspect the undercarriage with the mechanic on prepurchase, although he didn't mention those - I can even check them now - I have a set of metric wrenches from my MG days). Thanks again for all the ideas. R

The car is in Park - won't start (no turn over - just dead and silent) with two error codes. When the tow truck came - it would not start after a considerable jump and we could not shift to neutral to pull it out of the garage - had to pull it out on skids. As it won't move out of Park - there was no attempt to start it in gear.
I was questioning why the two bolts on the linkage would inhibit the car from starting - just don't understand what the affect of the linkage is to electronic system (there is sooooo much electric guess it could be) - most of the posts regarding the issues with the two bolts - the car would start just not shift.... is it someting about the '06 S Type 4.2. thanks! r

Thank you and everyone else for the assistance - I feel that I an much better educated and can discuss the sitution with the mechanic - which I think has been helpful to him. This is the first used car I've purchased that was not dealer certified - thought I was OK - great dealer (5th car purchased with them and they checked her before the put her on the lot), 90 day warrantee and a pre-purchase review with a cert Jag mech. It could be much worse - don't think there was a way of anticipating this issue - and the car didn't show anything major before purchase - may still now purchase an extended warrantee - it may be money well invested.
I'll post again when things are resolved and she's back on the road.

Well the good thing is it's not major. The bad thing is it's not common. The switches I was talking about in the shifter are for gear positions and are not a neutral safety switch but they do help perform that function.
If it won't shift out of park there is a well-known plastic piece that will break if you force the shifter. If that breaks you will need a new shifter. That's expensive but at this late date I would look for a used shifter to save money.
This is pretty well known and one guy has even reproduced this plastic piece in metal to prevent it from breaking again!
Be glad you or tow truck driver did not get rough with it or it would have broken.
Hope you will report back because I have never heard of that error code and am interested to see what it finally is.

whew - good news it's not a plastic piece - I've heard that several "plastic" parts were replaced in later models with metal ones - the Jag mechanic that did the prepurchase pointed several out to me... one of the reasons I choose the '06 vs an earlier model... and the 4.2 V8 vs. a 6... and he was right - the mileage isn't much less than what I read I would expect from the 6... and - WOW is she FUN to drive..... I live in a world of Cameros - Challengers - Mustangs - fun to hold my own when I enter the interstate or leave a light.... my Detroit upbringing....
