error messages
Help - There are two messages, the first is "park brake error" then "gear box error" - when I turn key in ignition. Car does not turn over. Anyone have any ideas - I'll need to have a tow truck pull it out of my garage to get it into service tomorrow. thanks!
Rosemary,
Welcome to the forum.
First, you need to go to the new member section and introduce yourself per foum rules. Doing this will get you upgraded to full membership. With full membership you will have access to a wealth of knowledge and more.
Sounds like a failing battery. These vehicles are very sensitive to a low battery charge. Do a search on "failing battery".

Thanks! It is the original battery so hope thats all it is - an easy fix.
I've been to the new member section - thought I did it right - any suggestions on what I might have missed?

According to your post count you've posted twice. You have two posts in this thread, so it looks like you failed to post an intro. You are also missing a sig, and car details so it seems you didn't read the new member sections either... You also asked a VERY common question that would have easily be found by searching, also covered in the new member forum, FAQ's, and the stickies. lol
ok ok, I'm just messing with you, welcome to the forum. Lots of good guys and info in here. Only a few small rules. Hope you fixed your car. Oh, and sometimes the Batt will check good but may have a bad cell...

Yikes.... maybe I didn't save what I input.... thanks for steering me in the right direction.
We don't have a Jag dealership in Fredericksburg VA - but several shops that service them. I recently purchased it used from a dealership that I trust - and have a 90 day limited warrantee - trying to make sure if it's something they should deal with or a certified Jag mechanic (not applying for correction under the warrantee).
I do not have any low battery message - the forum has shown similar issues - but not exactly my two messages. The last time I drove it was very wet - it got me home but would not turn over - silent except for the error messages.

Probably a bad battery but also check for damp/water in the trunk - remove spare wheel and be thorough.
You'll find by searching that there is very unlikely to be any kind of low voltage message with a failing battery. Things just go screwy.

Did the message come on only after the rain? Some water issues can cause havoc as well. Both in the truck, and under the hood.
The error messages when you have a bad batt will probably never say it's a low, failing, or bad batt. Usually something random like what you are seeing, or EPB, DSC failure.

I drove it all day in the rain (not the first time, it's been wet her lately) - it got me home fine but the next morning (yesterday) - I turned the key and "nothing" - then I noticed the messages - park brake error was first - a few seconds later gearbox error.
It is a 2006 and when I had a Jag mechanic check the car in pre-purchase - he noted that it looked like the original battery.
I do have a very limited warrantee - but if it's not something easily covered - I'd rather have a Jag mechanic look at it - so may just call a tow truck and haul it over him if it doesn't start with a jump.

I've got a tow truck coming - it's just that all the electric seams fine and strong... I did have an MG (at least this isn't Lucas) - I was worried about the age of the battery - THANKS all for the advise.
If you do get it fixed please post back. This really helps others that run into your symptoms. I am also thinking a battery replacement will be the solution.
Please make sure you get the proper battery. Since it's in the trunk it must have a vent tube. Check that it is hooked up after install.
You can use the Jaguar battery or aftermarket. My 2005 STR takes a Bosch 49-850B. You can get this at PEP boys for about $115. I "think" this should be the correct unit for your 2006.
Check your trunk carefully for water. This has been reported and will cause all kinds of problems.

The news from the shop is the neutral safety switch has failed. This is bad news as the switch in my model isn't a simple fix - apparently the entire valve control body needs to be replaced (switch plus about 5 yrs labor). We may replace the battery due to age once we resolve this fix.
sorry - yes 5 hours.... guess I'm just a bit rattled over this. Still waiting for the shop and the warrantee company to come to an agreement and get the work started. Warrantee feels the fix should only be the switch... which isn't covered in the warrantee vs the valve control body which would be covered but far more expensive.... think I'll go find some chocolate.
thanks again!
thanks again!
Hmmmm a "neutral safety switch has failed" in a 2006 MY. I am sorry I am a bit skeptical.
How many miles are on your vehicle? How many owners prior? Have you checked to see what service had been done before ownership?
I ask because the ZF box in your car is very robust and I don't want to see you pay for something that might not be the cause.
Are there any codes that you could post?
