Default Newbie alert, S-type 4.0 has timing belt or chain?

Lookin to buy an 01 S-Type 4.0, the seller says the timing chain broke but isnt 100% sure, its what his local mechanic told him. I cant really trust some of these guys since many arent educated on Jags. How can I check? The mechanic said it was loose and he drove it with the timing chain loose and the now it finally broke, Also, will a 4.0 XJR motor work?

4 chains. Two primary and two secondary. They don't need replacing for the life of the engine thankfully - unless you have a tensioner failure and they stretch. Happened to me and I replaced ONE chain confidently.

Sachs makes them.

xjr motor wont fit in the stype totally different mounting
not to mention time effort and money it would take ecm/harness etc etc
as far as broken chain goes you better make sure valves arent bent or even worse broken
ive seen itquite a few timeswith totall destruction of cylinder wall and piston damaged

The 4.0l is an interference engine, ask me how I know[:@]Chances are the valves said hello to the pistons when the chain broke.

As far as it becoming loose before breaking, I'd be affraid tobuy a car owned by someone so neglegent!

Yep, not good judgment to drive a car with a loose timing chain.

Don't even consider any model year prior to 03. The 03 have major upgrades to the electronics and the engine. It also comes standard with the nav.
