Piano Black mockup in the XJR...
Finally got round to doing the Piano Black mockup in the XJR. Nothing special just gloss black 3M vinyl...
You remember how the car is a little "loud" inside, too many colours, too busy, etc...
It's a certainly more toned down now!
Hard to get the lighting right, it's so bright today, no clouds, i'm not used to it...!
Gotta change the drivers airbag for one with the black badge.
Like the last one? My attempt a creativity with the X-Type in the mirror...
So that settles it, i'll be getting the wood proffessionally done in black, when finances permit...

Jaguar veneer is always beautifully done but in this case it made the interior a bit frantic. The black complements the red perfectly.
Also liked the creativity with the mirror and the X-Type but couldn't help noticing in the same pic that you need to do some weeding outside the garage door.

Agreed, while the interior is nice, the veneer and the red leather can't coexist peacefully.
What I might try is have them stained darker, akin to the black-stain ash available in the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Then you'd be able to enjoy the wood grain, but it wouldn't really introduce another colour to the interior.
A poor mock-up:

Paint gives you plenty of options, I used a spare set, kept the originals, and had a set done in body colour. I do like that Black stained Ash effect, CF is too 'Audi'...

Can anyone give me more details on this black looking wood grained dash, is this stained or a wrap?

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm thinking of trying the semitransparent wrap to get the "black" veneer look from your mockup.
I've never wrapped any veneer before.. how difficult is it? And where would I find the semitransparent wrap? It seems like 3M makes quite a few but I'm not sure which is correct for this application.
Also, similar to the veneer in the 06 Super V8 Portfolio, I want to see if it's possible to get a "satin/matte" finish with wrap. Any thoughts?

Interesting that you bump this up now, I recently added a veneer to the roof console, also wrapped in the black vinyl...
As for a semi-transparent black vinyl to let the woodgrain show through, I guess you just have to search around the suppliers of vinyl film to see what they have.
My first though was to use window tint film, BUT that's probably not a good idea, the adhesive on that film is a one-shot application, and I don't think it would stretch very well. You could probably never get it off again either.
I doubt that a "smoked" film would completely mask the colour of the woodgrain either, especially if it was a bright colour like what was originally in my car.
If you have a good quality vinyl like the 3M product, it's not hard to do, just need to work slowly and patiently...

My only concern with using Piano black instead of some sort of wood grain is that my interior will be all black (unlike your cranberry/black two-tone), so I don't know if it will provide enough contrast. Any chance I could persuade you to photoshop the red out of your interior so I could see what the all-black might look like?
The reason I say will be, is because I haven't found the right XJR yet.. I tend to "put the cart before the horse" with these things... I've already ordered an all-leather heated wheel off of eBay in anticipation of the project, as wrapping the wood on the steering wheel seems infeasible.
