Default Fuel Cap Key

Here's an interesting one for you guys......when I purchased my 95 XJS I didn't get a key for the fuel cap, so what options do I have? Anyone know where I can get one made? Can you buy the barrel and the key?

I've had a look on the auction sites and a replacements go for silly prices.

As always your thoughts are appreciated.

On my '88 the gas cap uses the ignition key. Is there supposed to be a separate key?

You either need a new cylinder with key

JA-JLM477 - Lock & Key

Or you can have a locksmith repin the cylinder you have to work with a key.

I think option a is the cheaper alternative. It's Part # JLM477

Oh, scratch that, I see that the part is not in stock.

You can remove the cylinder and have a locksmith key it any way you like... you will need the proper blanks though. Perhaps you can find someone selling their old keys. A locksmith can re pin the cylinder to existing keys too.

I've got a half dozen caps with keys for the convertibles from 83-91. If you know if they're the same key type I'd sell one for $10 plus whatever the shipping costs. That's with the key. I don't have any 92-96 XJS's so I don't know. I can't imagine it being different. Some people do ask the craziest prices for some Jaguar parts. That's why I started buying parts cars to keep all my XJS's up.

Reviving an older thread I have the same problem with our 1996 model, my local locksmith can actually make us a key but he needs a key blank so i don't need the whole cylinder and key kit. I'd buy a set (lock with keys) if I have to if it's reasonable but really just need the blanks if anyone knows where I can get one of those?

I have bought them before. I want to say Terry's Jaguar has them, or maybe Welsh Enterprises.

The problem is that I don't recall the part number. JLM744?

There's someone selling one of those on eBay right now, but there's no picture.

There's a long version and a short version of that key and I can't recall which was which.

I took my cylinder apart this past winter and lost a tiny spring. I need to go to a locksmith and see if I can get one from them.

Strange but my '92 MY facelift uses the fuel cap key for the doors too. Ignition and boot use tibbe key. Doesn't matter as l always use the remote though....

As you probably know, your 95 XJS uses a completely separate key for the fuel cap. It's nothing to do with the doors or ignition.

Jaguar keep a record of the key numbers for each car. Just go and talk to your local dealer and ask them to source the key numbers for your VIN number. You'll need to produce proof of identity. Don't know how US stuff works, but in the UK, they can look up the key record for the car at the dealership.

Good luck
