Brakes appear to be working now. Pedal is kinda stiff which it was before, but the brakes work. There was just air in the lines.

I'm still sourcing parts for a fail safe system.

Here are photos of my system. The actuator box is attached to the master cyclinder (some people may cal it one unit but its sold as two separate units). If someone can pot photos of there system this thread could be more useful to people changing systems.

nice luck man!

Is the old plastic causing the fluid to just look dark or is it really that dark?

as a side note:
Goda** i am jelly of the space in a straight 6 engine bay

Really pleased that you've got your brakes sorted. It sounds as if it's been a frustrating process!

I think from your photo that it's the same unit as mine and we're actually saying the same thing. The "master cylinder" isn't sold separately from the actuator - it's just the last chamber of the actuator unit. That's why it's £800 (if you can find one).

I believe that when you refer to the actuator unit, you really mean the valve block assembly that contains the solenoid valves?

Apols if I'm wrong on this.

The master cylinder Is sold separately and it is $850. Just go on ebay and search '1994 Jaguar xjs master cylinder'.

The fluid has always been crystal clear, at least since I have had it, so do not be fooled by the photo. Its just the lighting.

The brakes are working now. I am not sure things are perfectly ok yet. There was brake fluid around the drivers front tire. This could have drained from me spilling during bleeding or from it being overfilled. At the moment though I have brakes.

Still looking for a simple non-abs or bosch abs setup.

Good to hear that all is sorted. I'd like to change my system also but I think I'd have more problems trying to get it insured and MoT tested if I took off the ABS. In fact, I suspect I couldn't insure it here in the UK with usual insurance companies.

I had a look on ebay for "1994 XJS master cylinder". The ones that come up ($850) are definitely an incorrect description by the sellers. They say that it will fit a "1994 XJS" but it won't. What they are showing is the latest separate master cylinder (JLM 12080) that was only fitted from XJS VIN 198335 which has the Teves Mk IV. This was fitted from Nov 1994. It's what Jaguar called 1995.25 MY.

As mentioned, our cars don't have a separate master cylinder. What they call the "master cylinder is just the last 1" chamber of the actuator unit. You can't buy it separately as it's not a separate casting. You can get the valve block separately if you look around but the "actuator / master cylinder" is one distinct unit.

Tks for all your feedback. Here's hoping it's the end of your brake problems.

Brakes are ok now it seems. The moaning sound is gone now that the fluid is off the rotor.

Looking at the photo I can now see its the incorrect master cylinder. There is a master cylinder like thing that the actuator attaches to. I just had the actuator off and soldered wires in it, in place of the circuit board which was coming apart (possibly from me disassembling it). Whatever it is, I may eventually get rid of it but for now, its working fine.

it does look awfully new amongst all the other things in your engine bay
