I believe Grant is spot on.. Had the same problem and thought gasket or all kinds of horrible outcomes. I have a lift and it was easy to get to after I took off the right exhaust from the front of the cat converter. It was not a problem after that.

Looking at your picture it looks like the car is undercoated. Was that a Jaguar feature or was it after market? My 1993 appears the same and it was undercoated at some time some where???

In my case, the car was undercoated from new, by an aftermarket firm. I redid it all when I rebuilt the car. BUT, it is very important, I believe, to protect the car with layers under the coating first. In my case I poainted on a special rust killer/protecter called AquaSteel, then special paint, then the chassis coating you noticed. So far so good, but it does not get used much in salty conditions any more, and in the UK, that seems to be the killer. Also VERY important to do the inside of ALL sections with the same treatment using a spray probe. Most particularly sills, rear wheelarch/buttress join from the inside, under the back seat where the radius arms are fixed to the outside of that panel, front floors inside, toe panel inside the cavity.
