Does Nigel's book have any stats on the production numbers by color per year?

I have the same book and there are no numbers as to color, options, etc. I assume the information is available somewhere if somebody was curious enough to do the searching.

Those production numbers are quite a bit higher than I thought they would be, especially the ragtops. Guess the XK8 isn't as rare as it appears to be in our neck of the woods....

 

I assume those are total numbers worldwide?

 

Still, when you see the numbers presented on a model year basis, there were a number of years where a given model (e.g., XKR convertible) had production of only maybe 1000 or less TOTAL. I believe roughly 1000 or so was the case for the 2005 XKR I own so I would consider this pretty limited and would qualify the car for somewhat rare/exclusive.

'You and Your Jaguar XK' is another of Nigel Thorley's excellent books on Jaguar but was published before the last of the XK8's were produced. As a result, the production figures are not entirely accurate.

The definitive figures are in 'Jaguar XK8 - The Complete Story' by Graham Robson. I'm 2000 miles away from my copy at the moment but here's the table I attached to an earlier post on this topic:

I haven't seen a breakdown of colour, options etc. The only source of this information is likely to be Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT).

Are Robson's numbers for calender year production? Some of the cars produced in 2005 were sold in the US as MY 2006.

 

You're in California. You'll still pay for it. Your registration fee is higher and you will need to get smog checked every other year because of the Gas Guzzler flag on your registration...

 

Robson's figures are calendar year.

The new Jaguar 'Model Year' is mid year because the new MY was traditionally introduced after the factory summer break - 2006 MY effectively being built from mid 2005.

The last XKR came off the line on 27th May 2005 and is in the JDHT collection. The Jaguar Browns Lane factory closed shortly afterwards and was subsequently demolished.

Although all Final Series XK8/XKR (the US 'Victory' and UK 'S' models) were completed before the end of May 2005, they are correctly classed as 2006 MY.

I am purchasing a 2006 XKR convertible and I am a new member of the forum. I thought I would start learning about this little beauty.
The production of a few thousand each year, explains the reason that I have never seen a pre-2007 XK on the road. 90K produced is probably not rare, but is certainly a limited number.

I live in a large uk city,if i see (2) 96/05 xk in a month then thats good going,ime beginning to think you have more now in the usa than the ukeven on a 300mile trip on the motoway last week i only spotted 4 i think i need to go to the next growler meet up lol.

 

I guess "rare" is really a relative term. In 2010 alone, Toyota produced 523,426 Prius cars. (What is the plural of Prius, Priuses?)

 

I also found it interesting that there are roughly twice as many XK8 coupes as XKR coupes but over three times as many XK8 convertibles as XKR convertibles. It makes sense when you think about it--for several reasons.

The XKR is the performance version and that is consistent with a fixed roof; the XK8 is the boulevardier model most appropriate to a drop top, and most popular in America; and the XKR convertible is the one with the original MSRP most firmly planted in the stratosphere.

Gee an average of 1,900 coupes per year over the span of the series is pretty low.

My 1961 Corvette had 10,939 that year...and my car is considered "rare". My 97 xk8 @5,141 is less than half of that.

I'd like to get my paws on a 2006 coupe.

(What is the plural of Prius, Priuses?)

I now own a 2006 XKR coupe with Feb 2005 as production date.




from Grahams post there were a few more cars made and more XKR coupes made than Thorley book, which I have, and see was done March 2006... as the numbers of MY 2006 are hard to figure out does anyone know which in the calendar year are MY 2005 and which are MY 2006?

The last XK8 came off the production line on Friday 27th May 2005 - a Frost Blue XKR 4.2-S which was handed over to JDHT (Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust).

This last specification 4.2-S was announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005. An equivalent (but limited number) Victory Edition for the US only was announced at the LA Show in June 2005 - after the last XKR had rolled off the production line!

The only reason 2006MY XK8/XKR exist is because the US applies the date of import and not the date of manufacture. These are therefore correctly 2006 MY but were all built before 27th May 2005.

But what I really want know is out of the 669 XKR coupes made in calendar year 2005 , which were MY2005 or MY2006 ?

What was the cut off date or VIN# perhaps... or are all 2005 calendar year production cars 2006?

As I just think Jags are the sexiest car going [old and new]... But want to know the provenance / rarity of mine.

As an interesting note [ from the CarFax] my XKR's date of US entry [Los Angeles] was on March 29 2005 @ 1 month old Feb 25 2005 Build date. Then was, I guess, sitting there until Nov 10 2005, then sold at action [listed as a manufacturer vehicle] to a dealer and then put into dealer inventory on Jan 3 2006, and original owner bought Jan 14 2006, and now I'm Owner #2 .

So the date of entry is 2005 and an anomaly, cause its Titled a 2006.

The 2006 cars where left overs from 2005, this happens all the time. The "Real" last year for the X100 was 2005, regardless of what the title says. I think this has already been discussed in this forum
