Hi Phil. Could you be so kind as to offer an update on your headliner project is how it's holding up,condition of visors etc. I believe we have similar tastes and I'm seriously considering duplicating your efforts. Thanks so much

To paint lighter colors: it might work better to put down a coat of black or dark grey point first in order to remove any color variation. Then paint the tan over that. Common technique for painting metal etc. but I have never tried it on fabric so please test on some spare material first.

Planning on doing this same project very soon. My question is what do you mean by removing the carpet in the back on the floor or near rear window ?

I took out the piece of carpet that lines the area the top will fold down into. It was just a molded piece that if I remember didn't even have any type of fasteners. Made it easy to paint to the edges of the headliner without having to mask the carpet. Tape wouldn't stick well.

Update- it's been several years since I did it and I've only had to touch up near the rear window a bit due to constant opening of the top. Even then, I didn't notice anything until I really looked at it.

Is it difficult to take the carpet out ? Whats underneath the carpet btw ? I was thinking maybe putting newspaper back there covering the carpet up my carpet is black.

Honestly I don't remember but I think it's just formed to fit and just pulls out. It's probably fine to paint it left in especially if it's black.

If I remember correctly, the side A pillars simply pull out with a gentle tug, the top will need some pieces removed. The visor clips and center overhead cluster, all of which will need to be unplugged once removed. I think the center lights cluster are also held in with tabs and can be pulled down gently.
I used a plastic satin black spray to cover any plastic pieces just to get good adhesion, then final spray with fabric spray to match.

I also used a stretch faux suede to cover all of those pieces since they are so visible and it also looks more expensive. Very easy to cover and I used hot glue.
I also painted the visors black.
