Default 67 420G Headliner/Rear window trim

So I collected my 420G and it's in the garage awaiting a lot of attention. This is my first Jag and is very exciting so I am starting to make lists and plans of how I should go about things. Any way I have a gazillion questions, please bear with me!

Here is the first:

The rear window obviously leaked, (I have new rubbers), but at some time in its history the rear trim has been removed, see photos, question is what was there? Walnut trim? Just headliner? Both? Headliner on a backing board?

I couldn't find any photos online and the parts manual shows what looks like a full surround and a thin strip at the bottom but the description of the parts does not say what it is.

So any photos or description of what should be there would be greatly appreciated.

The cant-rail wood trim is visible in your photo and is the only bit of wood in that area, (to cover the tacking line for the headliner). The area with no trim is normally headlining material on shaped formers, with a foam interlayer to give it a bit of softness.

Look at items 19 and 27 on the SNG Barratt website

SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist

You'll see they are not available for on-line purchase, but might be available to special order.

Thanks Frazer.

I still have the thin bottom piece in place so it will be just the top part, I have asked if they can supply one.

I will probably have to get a whole headliner kit also. Although mine is in good shape, the sun visors are falling apart and the rear of the headliner in the middle is sagging, which I am guessing the foam backing has turned to dust like it has inside the sun visors. I will of course need headlining for the rear panel anyway.

If anyone has done this headliner replacement or has photos of that rear panel and close ups of how the headliner material is mated with the rear window rubber, (I am guessing the rubber must be fitted after the headliner fabric is glued to the window flange, on second thoughts perhaps the upholstered panel is just a close fit???)

Again any advice greatly appreciated.

Nope they don't have one and my search has proved fruitless so far. Most likely have to make one.

There are very few of these cars around now, and those that went to the scrap yard are long since converted to baked bean tins, so making your own trim panel seems the only option. I'm not sure what material Jaguar used originally, but in that location, it needs to be damp-resistant with condensation likely to flow off the back screen onto it. Probably some thin plywood suitable treated for damp, or weather resistant hardboard

Bean tins..........thank you Heinz!

Here's the plan: make templates with paper, then card, then cut hardboard to shape. Soak the hard board just enough so that it will bend without cracking, put in place with all manner of wood supports so that it takes the bends and shape of the car. When dry make marks of the clip mounting holes, remove make holes, test fit. Paint the whole thing with a suitable waterproofing material, (good idea Frazer) I have some shower waterproofing for dry wall, that might do it. Upholster and install.

I will try to remember to take some photos of the steps and progress and post up.

I hope to do this in a few weeks time if I can get the bathroom done, big job, (this was part of the deal to buy the car in the first place), failing that it will have to wait until the spring.
