Default Mk 2 Tyres

Hi Folks.

Im presently re-commissioning a 1961 Mk 2 I have a set of Drayton bolt on wire wheels that are 14 inch and I'm wondering what tyres to use.

I personally prefer Bridgestone but I was wondering if any of you can advise me.

Regards
Paul.

14" tyres will have a large sidewall, what width are the rims?

I'm not familiar with the tyre size the MK2 should be running, even though I have three of them in a shed.

But keep the rolling diameter the same for comfort and correct speedo readings (if it is calibrated) and as for wheel width that will also depend on your rim width, too narrow a rim and too wide a tyre really doesn't give nice feedback when driving, wallows al over the place

Default Mk 2 tyres

Thank you Stoney for your reply. the Mk2 runs 15inch tyres normaly. I know dropoing down to 14 inch will change a few things like speedo etc .

What I was really looking for is what tyres others have used as in make and model etc . the Wheels I have are 5inch -6 inch wide so 195 /14 will go on OK and I will go for normal hight tyres and not low profile as it will change so much and make the car look strange So i will go with my gut feel and try Bridgestones or Bob Jane specials, as Bob used to race a mk2 many years ago.

When I buy tyres these days I tend to ask what country they come from.

Personally I would not pay a premium for a Bridgestone/Dunlop/Goodyear that is made in Malaysia or China. I'd rather pay the same or less for a Korean made Kumho although some of those are Chinese made these days.

Better still I'd rather pay a bit more and buy a Japanese Toyo.

If I were going to pay the premium I would be expecting a European or Japanese tyre.

Hi mate,

If you get onto the Jax Tyres website, they have a choice of 9 tyres from $89 to $139. Tyre size 195/60R14.

Of the lot, I would probably choose Maxis or Hankook. I'm not a fan of Dunlop (claimed to be noisy, but maybe this means more grip? Dunno.)

I find the Jax website useful, at least they have the guts to advertise prices, not like many others. I just bought 4 Continentals (15" but) in a 3 for 4 deal and after using a$50 gift card received earlier, only cost me $264.00

PS I think the Maxxis is European. The Hankooks got a good review in an Oz magazine (Motor, I think)last year. But that name puts me off.

PPS - I am not an employee of Jax.

Nowadays, with far flung global manufacturing, label engineering, and ever-changing corporate parentage I'm not convinced that anything meaningful (with respect to quality) can be concluded from brand name alone....or country of origin.

I can remember when nobody would be caught dead with a Kumho or Hankook tire. That was years ago. Now they've caught on and have, generally speaking, become quite popular and enjoy a good reputation.

Cheers
DD

I have a set of Kumho KU36 tyres on my skyline, the grip is phenomenal, such a sticky tyre, I recommend Kumho's now, mums Hyundai IX35 has done 90,000kms so far on its first set of tyres and they are kumho's too, grippy and quiet, KL21 eco friendly (whatever that means with a non degradable tyre)
