knock in motor

Default knock in motor

my 88 xj40 has a terrible knock when u start it up which seems to be under the distributor and after a while it goes and i can alter the density of the knock by turning the steering wheel while the vehicle is stationary
help

As mentioned, BUT, check the tightness of that BIG bolt in the front of the crankshaft. They have a real habit of coming loose.You will need to jam the flywheel with a pry bar to achieve that tightness required.

I am not sure of the relationship of turning the steering, as the steer pump is gear driven from the aux shaft, that also drives the distributor, and is NOT a known issue.

Maybe a collapsed engine mount, but that is really clutching at straws.

i should clarify and say the knock is not in the motor itself but someewhere around the bottom of the distributor or power steering pump

OK.

Only thing under that area is the a/c compressor, and its myriad of mounting bolts (6+ from memory) and easy access (NOT) may be the source of the knock.

Its defiantly not the power steering pump its self? Especially if the knock is changed with movement of the steering wheel?
