Default 2.0 x type diesel fuel consumption down

HELP!!
My 2.0 x-type Jag used to do 52 to a gallon but one day it went down to only 42mpg.
Does anyone know why this has happened?
I have changed the fuel and air filters and checked the MAF sensor.

And now it is 38mpg!
What is it - could it be the Injectors?

David if it helps i only get 35mpg (around the town) from my 2005 2.0 diesel which from doing some digging about is about the norm, have you checked your egr and inlet manifold may need a clean. i know it not the perfect answer hopefully may point you in the right direction

Hi David, I was confused by the title...........do you mean fuel consumption has gone up?

I guess so............my advice would have been to check the MAF but you say all is good there?

I ran with lower mpg for a while but now it won't go at all.
The garage say the injectors are ok and I probably need a new Diesel Fuel Pump which may be an 'uneconomic' to repair job.
Is there an alternative way to substitute a fuel pump on a 2.0 Diesel Ford engine???
Pity really as it is a nice car and not in my view ready for scrap.
Please help...
David

The pump is about £550 new and you will want new. not a terrible job I'm told about 3-4 hours max. I have a new pump in my collection of bits if you need one give me a shout and you will save a few quid.PM me if interested
