Default 1970 S2 Oil Filter

Could not determine if this subject has already been discussed. As purchased, the engine oil filter assembly had only a filter element in the filter cannister. No spring, washers, plates, etc. According to diagram on SNG Barratt for engine numbers after 7R2298, I needed all of these parts for a proper assembly, so I purchased them. However, the JLM 9544 filter element I received has a 1.375" bore to mate with a 1.0" nipple on the filter head. I noted the filter assembly for engines prior to 7R2298 had another plate which trapped the filter element on the filter head thus creating a seal and forcing the oil through the element. So, I made a plate for this end. Unfortunately, the through bolt is tight before the cannister mates with the o-ring at the filter head and the elrment was getting crushed. Obviously, my through bolt and cannister are shorter than those which use the inner plate. The element must slip over the nipple in the filter head and some oil will not flow through the filter as a result of the mismatch of element bore to filter head nipple. Or, am I missing something else?
