The strut Rob shows is interesting and may suit your needs. If you wish to be "authentic", e-types used a pair of linkages, 1 on each side, as in the photo. Each linkage contains the stop and 2 small coil springs that hold the bonnet open. SNG Barratt, and probably others, carry them.
Difference between Series 1 and 2. Series I is as you suggest, but series II, '69 to '71, used a strut. The picture you provided looks like late Series I to me (though the cam covers don't appear to be correct for a series I). My '70 has the strut as well.
Rob, as, I said, I have not seen (noticed) the strut. But after checking the JCNA judging guide, there it is after 6/69. I am embarrassed. Incidentally, my car is a series 1.5 back dated to triple SU's. So much for authenticity but some changes are worth it.
I wondered about that, I had a '67 (loved every part of the car but the Strombergs and the raised headlights), I couldn't remember if it had the strut or not. But the SUs threw me off which is why I thought it was an older car. The Strombergs were easier to work on but man you sure took an HP hit. I liked the side draft Webbers the best, I had those on my racing '64 and really loved them (when they were properly balanced). I should have guessed it was one of the 1.5s. Your engine is a work of art, nice job keeping it that pristine. Of course mine now has that 327 in it (something I'd wanted to do as a kid but couldn't afford at the time, nature of getting old is that some of us like to revisit our youth). Have a great weekend!
