My body shell has been repaired and ready for repainting in its original color of Carmen Red. Its at a shop a few hours away (long story) and they Fedexed a pant sample yesterday. It looks very dark, and almost brown. In bright sunshine it doesn't brighten up to red either. I'm sure it is the PPG version of Carmen Red - but doesn't look like the Jaguar Color I'm familiar with. Has anyone had this kind of issue? Does anyone have a "factory mix / recipe" for Carmen Red or an alternative PPG paint color that more closely matches the original Jaguar color?. I recently bought a red E-Type on Bring a Trailer. In the photos it looks bright red. But in person it almost looks maroon. I wonder if that's the paint sample you have?

According to Paintref.com, the old paint PPG code for Carmen red is 70824, Dupont code is 8311, and Glasurit is Jag-303. These old codes are for lacquer or enamel paints that no longer exist, but PPG, Dupont, or Glasurit tech representatives may have a cross reference to a modern single stage or two stage formula. I had a similar problem trying to match an MG British Racing Green old code to a modern code. My paint supplier contacted PPG and they were able to recommend a modern formula that ended up being a very good match. I suggest asking your shop to talk to PPG. It may be a long shot as not all old codes are recreated in modern formulas, but worth a try. If that does not work, I would contact a paint supplier who handles Glasurit and try the same. If nothing works then another option is to find a modern car or truck that has a red you think is close to Carmen red. Your shop will have no problem finding a code from there.

Do you have a sample from the original car (like the Fuel Door) that you could have computer matched?

 

I agree, that's what I did. After 20 years of fading, my Jag red matched a 2003 toyota matrix red perfectly.

 

Thank you for the replies - its really appreciated. I'm sure the comment about enamel colors not translating correctly to modern paints is correct. Maybe the accuracy depends on color / shade also, so sometimes it might be good, other times not so much. Unfortunately I don't have any of the original car to use because it was re-painted many years ago. The only part with original paint was the panel behind the center dash, now covered in primer! Great idea to check modern cars - thank you for that! The paint shop has been very good and is sending more red samples of various shades, and is also trying to source original Jaguar color chips.
