Evening ladies and gents,

I believe I need to overhaul/retune my s2 to fix my idling issue. I can't find any threads on this and was wondering what the key points are to make sure it is operating properly. Car has 30k miles on it and has just sat in the garage for 25 years until I recently got her running. Thank you in advance

Hi,
If your distributor has seen no service in 40+ years, outside of the usual tune-up adjustments, I would send it to a rebuilder. I did this a number of years ago and had mine totally rebuilt and the advance curve calibrated.
Was the best $150 I ever spent on the car. Prior to this, I ran a Mallory, but, have since shelved it.
Advanced Distributors: Distributor Repair at its Finest!
I had this guy rebuild, both my FORD Mustang and Lucas dizzy.
Good Luck....

Before you go to the expense of a rebuild, try lubing the advance/retard mechanism. You put a few drops of oil down the centre of the distributor, having first removed the rotor arm. A drop onto the swivels for the advance weights also would be useful. 25 years is plenty of time for these things to rust up.

X2 for Jeff Schlemmer of Advanced Distributors. The distributor will come back looking better than new and work better than new. He replaces all worn parts with new and does a fabulous job. I've used him on 3 of my MG distributors and have only good things to say.

Hello Ol Blue,
If the car really only has 30k miles, I doubt if the distributor's moving parts would be worn to the extent that it would require rebuilding. Rust is slow combustion of iron in steel and therefore requires oxygen to occur. Any close fitting steel components are unlikely to have rusted very much, as air (oxygen therein) would have been excluded; only bare steel exposed to the atmosphere. Accordingly, I concur with Fraser and would give it a thorough clean and lube.

Regards,

Brent
