Might be purchasing a 73 2+2 V12 4 speed...50k miles. #'s match....buying from 2nd owner, who has owned since 1975. Wondering what I might be getting into.
I've driven the car (not past 2nd gear), and it seems to run well. All gauges appear to work, as does the AC. Body is straight, interior nice but front seats need to be redone. I would guess it was repainted about 15-20 years ago (white). I've owned a 76 XJ6L, and an early XJS. Always coveted an XKE, but a little worried about the V12....any advice?? Thanks for any assistance, as this is my first post. Any quick advice would be welcome, as I need to make a decision tomorrow (10/25)!!!!

 

It's a low mileage for the year.

Having said that, the speedo is easily removed to clock it so you need some sort of proof of miles. If the price is right then go for it, but the car is nearly 40 years old, so there will be some work needed somewhere. These cars were a child of their time and serious rust-proofing was not part of that era, so check this aspect carefully. This check needs to include the square-tube engine frame, as these corrode internally and support the whole front of the car, engine suspension etc. There is a comprehensive parts back-up for all E-types provided you can afford the prices, so no problem if you have the money in keeping the car in order.

The V12 is a wonderful engine, and I wish I could have a V12 Jaguar, (an XJ saloon), but our UK fuel prices make it a dream only. These cars have carburettors and are serious drunkards with fuel, but clearly it will not be an everyday driver, so probably bearable, especially at US fuel prices.

 

You're buying a 12 cylinder which means 12 spark plugs and close to 12 quarts of oil. They require TLC mechanically. Check original carburetors (very problematic). Webers are the best but SU replacements are great also and more affordable. Check fuel pump as well. The modern ones are more dependable.
All of that aside, I LOVE my Kitty.
