Newbie with a 67 E-Type
Just want to introduce myself. My name is Herb and I have a numbers matching 1967 1.25 E-Type OTS. I live outside of Denver CO.
I bought Emma, named after Emma Peale, in pieces from the estate of a gentleman who purchased it from the original owner, took it apart (no pictures, no labeling) and then passed away suddenly. The back wheels are still on but everything else has now been cataloged and boxed up. It took me about two months to identify all the pieces. I won't know what's missing until I start reassembly. I've restored a couple cars before, a bugeye and an Rx-7, but I had the benefit of taking those apart myself.
I'm in the process of building a new garage/workshop. So I'm working on small projects that I can finish, box up and put in storage, like the carbs and the heater box. So far I've dismantled the carbs and sent parts off for re-plating and polishing. Next on the list will be the gearbox, then the engine, rear dif, etc. The shell is in good condition considering it came from Ohio but I'm sure I'll find some rust that is not readily apparent. I'm going to do as much work myself as can but I know there are some things beyond my capability. Luckily, I've known a mechanic for 40 years that is very familiar with British cars and E-Types specifically.
I'm sure that I will be leaning on you all for specific input as things progress. But right now I have just a few questions out of curiosity if you do not mind.
1) In general where were black oxide bolts used and where were cadmium plated bolts used?
2) Who makes the best frame sets Martin Robey or E-Fabs. (One of mine is not repairable.)
3) How was the bonnet painted? As all one piece or separately?

I think you will discover that there is a lot of collective knowledge in this community. For things such as the particular finish on hardware, the best place is probably the concourse judge's guide for your particular. I feel your excitement and pain at the prospect of assembling a car that you did not take apart. I did a similar project with a DeTomaso Pantera. I thought I could put it together in 6 months or so, but in the end it took me six years.
Post some photos of your project so we can enjoy it with you.

You most likely won't find what every finish is on every bolt. Most were black oxide or silver CAD plated. But the JCNA judges guide does have some. JCNA has basically put the judges guide under lock and key on the website. You must be a JCNA member in good standing to log in and view them. I can't really blame them for doing that, it took many hours to develop them. My good friend, Bob Stevenson, wrote the Series I E-type guide.
If you are a JCNA member you may want to contact the author of the Series 1.5 Judges Guide, but don't expect them to hold your hand.
I would start with the bolts you have and see what finish is on them, I would expect that the majority of the series 1.25 etc. bolts would be CAD plated.

1) Go to JCNA.com
2) Top of the LH column is login, click on that
3) There will be 3 tabs - Login, Create new account , Reset password
4) Since you haven't log in before try create new account. If you have any trouble go to the reset your password tab and there is a link at the bottom of the white box to contact the webmaster. He'll help get you set up unless your club hasn't sent JCNA the new member list and dues.
5) Your user names is your JCNA number. The JCNA # will be on the Jaguar Journal address label or membership card.
6) Once your in, a new heading in the LH column will pop up called "member section" and in there you will find the Judges Guides.
You'll want to look at both Series 1 & 1.5 for your car.
