Raymond Loewy French bodied E-type
I saw this car in the Rodeo Drive Father's Day show a year or two ago. Gold in color. Originally bought from Loewy's office in Paris (Loewy was a famous American industrial designer, did the Avanti). I was wondering if anyone remembers what this car was offered for from its San Diego area owner. I think it sold at a major auction for over $100,000. I have trouble figuring out if that was a good deal since it was unrestored. Still, I think some collector cars are bought because of who the owner was; as a tribute to the owner as it were. Also any comments on the styling? It seems to have a rear roof spoiler that looks like a mini windscreen that would be used on a car with a rumble seat, if it had a rumble seat. I don't like the Corvair taillights but maybe the French coachbuilder thought he would have to use US. legal taillamps. Anyway I think it's a car with Pebble Beach potential because it's a "car with a story" and if they ever honor the E-type at Pebble it would be a good candidate

Like many of Loewy's later designs this one is just a little bizarre. It was sold for $128,000 including premium by Bonhams in 2011. The car in my avatar - a 1936 Hupmobile Aero Dynamic Coupe is Raymond Loewy's first full automotive design - rather than the restyling of an existing model. This is, in my opinion, proof that he did design some truly beautiful cars, but such a shame that this did not continue in his later life.
