Series I 3.8 Generator-Alternator Conversion?
Hello,
My '63 generator has been giving me troubles of late, and I had heard that somewhere you could get either a conversion to put in a later-model alternator or an alternator from a different car altogether.
I looked over google and could only find a conversion that requires changing the car to negative-ground first, and while that is possible I'd prefer to just drop in a new alternator and not have to monkey with any more of Lucas' witchcraft than I absolutely have to.
Anyone have any ideas or links to some conversions?

Changing polarity is very easy, I had it done in about 5 minutes when I rebuilt a Mark 2 in the 80s. You can now buy alternators that look like the old dynamos so the under-hood appearance is maintained. Not cheap though.
Certain things on the car have to have leads swapped when polarity is changed but its not really a big deal as there are no complex electronics in these cars.

I agree, IMHO, it costs more but there are a few companies that make a alternater 6 or twelve volt, positive or negative ground but in a generator casing, not a GM 1960s alt look.
Its very light compared to the original and even has an option warning light feed.
They make a 1 wire as well eliminating the regulator.
From 200 to 400 and you never ever worry again and your lights will never go dim at stop signs at night.
