Default type of wood to use for luggage board project

The wooden luggage boards are rotted on my 68 coupe and I want to buy new wood and some vinyl and redo them. What is a good type of wood that wont rot and is soft enough to put staples in it?

Hi RacerXF12004,
I would use plywood with several coats of paint for the boot boards. If you want to get fancy use marine plywood.
