Looking for an experienced contact/shop to replace the tires on my wire wheels on a 69 Jag XKE....in the San Diego area...tubes and current tires are 10+ old
Wheels are off...I believe rims are original, and they cleaned up beautifully...
Also, and thoughts and suggestions on this much appreciated - tape the spokes or rim strips (?) and suggestions on tubes, which are offsets on these wheels...spokes stems not all on the same "level" - so I would guess this is a special fitted rim strip...
Suggestions on tubes? Replacement tires are radials...I've heard about the talcum powder...
Rim tape, and Michelin tubes are normally good and reliable in my experience. Make sure whatever shop you go to has the correct cones and equipment to balance wire wheels. If they get it wrong it's awful.
I like them because there is nothing applied to the wheel itself and there is no goo left from using tape. I have used Continental and Michelin tubes; any name brand (check Amazon) would be ideal.
Perhaps check with the San Diego Jaguar club for shop recommendation??
I'm in the San Diego Jaguar Club - its very active. You could check the website and look at the several shops advertising. They either do this work, or can advise on local services. BTW - I have rebuilt the original wire wheels myself and its massively labor intensive, hence no personal recommendations. What I do know is trueing the wheels properly requires all the spoke nuts to be capable of adjustment to get the radial and axial dimensions correct. If anything is rusted it needs to be replaced. FWIW I used rim bands, Michelin tubes and Pirelli 185VR15 CN12 Tires. Old school bubble level balance worked well.
