Default XKE Tires and where NOT to get them.

Hey guys!
I dont know how many of you are interested in buying from longstone, but I came here today because I promised longstone I would after being shot down by them. Unfortunately the discounts dougal has been offering on all these forums around the internet for members or whatever WILL NOT BE HONORED by longstone. Not only that, but they said they don’t offer discounts and never have. I had to send them two screenshots to prove dougal had been before they would even take me seriously. Now they say there prices are “on special” so no discounts available. I will not be doing business with longstone now so I guess it will for sure be the vreds for me.. and after reading all the information about them on here, I’m super happy about that... I almost bought the Perelli‘s from Longstone, before I realized theres a better tire out there and apparently a better company too.. Thank you forum and all these great people sharing their results. It truly is a fact how valuable information is when a community unites to preach it!!!

Xesvuli420 the Vreds are a great compromise tire--I use them. If you wish the full experience I suggest you look at the Dunlops 185-15 but then again I am not sure of your year or use. The Dunlops will not last much more than 12k miles but they glue you to the road. So unless you are going to do aggressive driving I agree with the Vreds.

Thanks for your thoughts. I may be putting the cart before the horse ordering anything, if I’m unsuccessful in restoring these wheels, would the same tires fit on a dayton?

Also does anyone know if these are the same vred tire? The “warehouse” says they are the same exact tire just worded different... can anyone confirm?
Vredestein sprint classic 185hr15 vs
vredestein sprint classic 185/70r15
I did see there seems to be two weight options.. i think 89 and 91 maybe.. not really sure how important that is but I the ones I ordered are the 89s. I got 4 for shipped for like 520$

For the purpose of tires (or tyres) the Dayton splinned wheels are exactly as the Dunlop wheels--only us old farts can tell the difference! If this is for an E Type you want the 185 15s

Isnt there an inch different on the width?

and not sure what you mean by “you want the 185 15s”... they are both 185 15s..?

a little clarification please, and thank you!

and fun note, I chose the I becuase this is an XKE (usa) forum, if it was e type (uk) forum then I wouldve used the Y!

Xesvuli420 - glad to see that you are soldiering onwards. It would be useful if you would identify which series of E-Type you have (perhaps I just missed that). It has been a while since I worried about wheels and tires, but as I recall, the S1 (and 2?) had 5" wide wheels and the S3 6" wide. The wheel width would determine what aspect ratio tire would fit properly. With a little fudging, the S1 could usually fit the 6" wide wheels with the wider tires (one trick is to reverse the bump stops at the rear to gain a bit more clearance). On my S1, I was able to fit 6" wide knock-off alloy wheels with 70 aspect ratio tires but it was really tight. As you may know, depending on the Series, the wire wheel hub design is quite different ("curly" on S1 and "not curly" on S2/3).

As I recall, the Series 1 fitments are:
185VR15 on 5" rims per original for the later S1 (6.40-15 on the early S1).
205/70-15 on 6" rims as a plus size for the S1.
If you have ordered the 205/70-15 tires, then the 6" rim Dayton wire wheels (which do have a good reputation) would be the appropriate wheel. In some cases, folks have clearance issues with the plus size, especially at the rear - but often that is remedied by rotating the rear bump stops by 180-deg to gain some outboard clearance with the inside tire sidewall. Often there is no issue with the plus size (these were hand-assembled cars without robotic consistency in dimensioning).

I would hate to give bad advice - I guess I'm not sure on that. I've heard of people running 185 on 6-inchers and 205 on 5-inchers, but to me that sounded a bit dubious. I would recommend getting some professional advice: the chat guys on TireRack.com have always been helpful on obscure questions. You might try them.
