Default When in Rome...

Would you drive in Rome or avoid it like the plague. The reason I ask is that we will be visiting Rome after a holiday on the Amalfi Coast, and we like the idea of driving so that we can take some scenic routes along the way. But would you drive in Rome or is the traffic as bad as they say?

The traffic is not that bad IMHO. I'd be more worried about parking... locals seem to use bumpers as parking sensors.
