I bought my car a week ago and one of the trucks that paints the lines on the road got overspray ALL OVER the right side and back of my car. I thought I'd share how i got it off.

I bought a can of Acetone from a hardware store along with a couple cloth diapers (im sure you could use a microfiber cloth). I folded up one cloth into a small square so i could keep unfoling it ot a clean section, then got it wet with the acetone leaving the other cloth dry in my other hand. Then very lightly I rubbed off the paint in a small section (a square foot or so) then quickly wiped off the remaining chemical with the dry cloth. As long as you dont press too hard and dont let the acetone sit on the paint you shouldn't damage the clear coat. I washed the car afterwards and waxed it. I even went as far as clay baring the car but i only decided to do that because i hadn't done it yet. Any questions or comments feel free to ask!

Just FYI, one of the original purposes for which clay bars were invented was to remove overspray. You could have just used the clay without resorting to acetone.

 

@another_geek: I initially tried the clay bar and it only got some of the overspray off and it was taking far too long. That's when I decided to get the Acetone. But yes, you are right it would have eventually taken it off but I just didn't have the time for it.

 

Clay comes in different levels of aggressiveness. The stuff available over the counter in your local auto parts store is usually very mild. The more aggressive clays are only available in paint & body stores or online.
