Default F-Pace battery charging

Our F-Pace sits a bit, during the summer time, when the XJ is in service. It's now 3 years old, and I know that batteries don't last forever, especially when the car isn't driven. I was thinking about putting my charger on it, for a couple of hours. When we first got the car, and I was in the rear compartment, it looked like the battery's terminals were pretty well buried, if I remember correctly, so I didn't go back in there. I thought that I read, somewhere, that there are a couple of "accessory posts" under the hood.

I broke out the owners manual, and read through 5-6 pages of "cautions", including recommending the owner to not touch it, and take it back to the dealer, should replacement be necessary. But nowhere, in all those instructions, did it give any direction as to hook up a charger. Anybody have any suggestions? TIA!!

(and yeah, I know, go drive it for a while, but where I have to park it in the garage, doesn't make it easy to get it out.....)

Thank you, Graham!!

I saw in my e-mail inbox, late yesterday, that there was a reply to my query, but since I wasn't going to mess with it until today, I didn't read the e-mail. In preparation for this task, I just took a look under the hood of our F-Pace, before reading this post, and my SWAG (scientific wild assed guess) was that the "tall" post on the shock tower was indeed the ground, as your post confirmed. I don't have one of the "tenders", but since I've been using Optima batteries in my Corvette for a number of years, I bought an Optima charger, which is specifically designed for AGM batteries, and if desired, also has a built in "tender" mode. I'll hook it up a little later today.

Just in case anyone has a question to where the charge points are, in later model F-Paces, this is where they are on out 202 model. (they're basically the same as your '17....)

The "positive" (+) post, under the fuse box's cover.

The "ground point" on the RH upper shock tower.

This is ideal for TEMPORARY connection. Good to see it's consistent across the model years.

Worth adding here a warning for anyone considering a PERMANENT connection to the battery. Although it's tempting to use the nut (arrowed in blue) on the negative terminal, this will cause issues with BCM (Battery Condition Monitoring)

A nearby ground stud should be used instead.

I have a CTEK extension cable from the battery on my XK which exits at the rear of the luggage compartment and avoids having to empty it to get to the battery. The F-Pace battery is even more awkward to access and I just use the locations in the engine compartment instead although I'll probably fit an extension over the Winter.

Just to follow up, I hooked up my Optima AGM battery charger to those points, nothing exploded () and the battery charged just fine.
