Default 2014 Jaguar F-Type is calibrated for sonic delight

Was curious about the pops on the overrun and found this interesting article on the F-Type sound calibration.

Also interesting note on the ZF8 transmission vs a DCT.

" The aural effect is like a string of firecrackers dropped down a manhole, particularly on overrun. Certainly there’s a similar degree of juvenile delinquency involved in both activities, but customers don’t pay the $92,000 base price of the F-Type V8 S with the goal of being buttoned down"

Couldn't have put it better myself. It's also similar to the metaphor that Dan Neil used in his review.

"With the F-Type V8 S, rabies has set in. If the car's active sport exhaust is set to "Dynamic Mode"—which it will be, if you possess any red blood cells at all—the F-Type just bellows with feral, straight-pipe aggression right out of the Junior Johnson hymnal. On throttle, the supercharger's whine plays over the exhaust's whacking, resonant staccato. Off-throttle, rolling into a corner, the car's quad exhausts ignite in waves of snapping overrun, like firecrackers in an oil drum.

And now we have the answer to the question: What would my British luxury convertible sound like if it were entered in the B-main at Eldora?"

I also liked the comments from AutoBlog in their review:

"Withhold judgment on the world's greatest exhaust note until after you've heard the Jaguar F-Type V8 S . Its cackle, boom and pop under deceleration will have you rifling through its glovebox looking for a tool to remove the stereo. An in-dash audio system is trivial when four round pipes on the tail-end of a vehicle sound this good.

Combining modern technology with age-old exhaust plumbing, Jaguar's British engineers have developed a way to propel spent combustion gases into the atmosphere in a manner that elevates the complete driving experience. At idle, it purrs. Under acceleration, it roars. During cruise, it soothes. Perhaps most compellingly, during deceleration, it titillates.

.....

Accompanying the power is an exhaust note that will have passengers spewing commending profanities once they regain consciousness following this Jaguar's dizzying acceleration. With the Active Exhaust button pressed, a simple finger tap just aft of the shift lever, the sound under full throttle is throaty, raw and fierce. Under deceleration, it cackles, pops and booms as if two adversaries are engaged in a cannon battle deep within the muffler. Even though there is some trickery involved with electronically controlled bypass valves and late fuel delivery, the thunderous sound is undeniably glorious - it is one of the most impressive factory exhaust systems I have ever heard, and I never grew weary of its snarl."

The creative ways auto journalists come up with to describe a car's exhaust sound (or handling, or steering....) Amazing.

Perhaps creative, perhaps just good description. Don't forget that the F-Type is a very special car and you are lucky to own one. Think about that every time you drive it. The minute you take it for granted is the minute that you are undeserving.
