Is there any reason you couldn't just call a glass company and get the windshield replaced with a non infrared blocking one? In my experience it's usually not more than a few hundred dollars, i already have a great escort 360 max...would hate to go spend a couple grand on a front mounted solution...

Sure, but is it worth rolling the dice on squeaks and leaks?

I mean ill take some squeaks if it means i dont get points on my license and my insurance goes up.. in NC it's like a 60% surcharge on your full auto policy (for my f type and f150) for 3 years, goes straight to the state, not my insurance company (Statefarm)

Anyone know if IR glass is standard on the XE?

FWIW, I did feel a lot less burning during the test drive of a 2018 XE S than I did with my 328i (with no tint).

You're in the F-type forum. However, I just bought an '18 XE, and it has IR glass. I assume it's standard.

On page 71 in the 2017 F type owner's manual, there's a whole page on "Solar Attenuating Glass":
This type of windshield filters sunlight passing through a special laminated layer.
Electronic actuating cards, such as toll road payment cards or RF ID tags, can be fixed at the dedicated locations on the inside of the windshield. If these are located at any other part of a solar attenuating windshield, the electronic scanners may not recognize them.
The fixing location is at the top of the windshield as shown, close to the interior rear-view mirror.

There's a picture of the top of the windshield, where's the tiny black dots area both sides of the top of rearview mirror.
So I messed up & place both my radar detector & EZ tag right behind the rearview mirror, now must re-locate to the top of the windshield to the black dots area...

Thanks.

Just asked here because this thread seemed to have a lot of detail about IR windshields so I thought there'd be a higher chance of getting a response.

Hi. It's not standard on the XE but if it has a HUD you should have the IR glass. IR glass is an option without the HUD but I think if you have a HUD you have to have IR glass. The glass is meant to cut down on the UV and it possibly works, although it still gets pretty hot in there if you park it in the sun.

F types dont have the HUD as far as I am aware, but apparently IR glass is now an option.

Here's a pic of the revised locations of moving my radar detector up & replaced my EZ Tag to the new black dotted area...

Do not expect optimal performance from either in those locations as they are still partially obstructed by the layer. Your EZ PASS should go on the other side so that it can be fully within the green zone, and your radar detector should go in the garbage can, unfortunately.

This weekend I received an alert from my Beltronics STI mounted in the “hole” of of my athermic windshield. I was driving on a winding road and just finished passing three cars as my radar detector went off. It was CHP driving in the opposite direction with their radar on. My radar detector gave me enough warning so that when the CHP came around the corner and could clock my speed I could be going the speed limit. Definitely an impressive off axis detection especially considering that most of my windshield blocks radar.
