Default 2017 SVR infotainment upgrade for Apple CarPlay - Do or Don't?

Dear fellow F-Type owners,

I just received my 2017 model year SVR, and I'm loving every bit of it. It's been my dream car for years and finally I got it.
Just a bit of imperfection, the current software doesn't support Apple CarPlay. I'm thinking about bringing her to dealership for an infotainment system upgrade. However, I'm aware that upgrading to the new version of software can muted the car and exhaust and I definitely don't wanna do that. So the question really boils down to: should I upgrade the infotainment? Or just get a phone stand mounted somewhere in the interior (which I'm also reluctant to do as it really mess up the design of interior).

Current software version

My new car!

If you have the 8" screen with physical buttons each side no amount of software updating will make it work with CarPlay - you need the 10" with "soft" buttons. And that change came at MY18, so I think you'll have to research more drastic alternatives if you really want CarPlay.

Lovely car, BTW.

Thanks! I was browsing some earlier thread and realize that this may be the case. I saw that there are third party software like Naviks that can install Apple CarPlay on older model, not sure if this is worth it. Reference: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...5/#post2376738

Correct that OP cannot upgrade. However incorrect about it being first available for 2018. The 10 inch debuted MY 2019 https://www.evo.co.uk/jaguar/f-type/...dates-for-2019

Nevertheless, I believe there are some MY18s with the 10" screen, which is why a lot of MY18s were offered the CarPlay/Android Auto upgrade. Subsequently, the MY18s with the 8" screen were offered another "update" to remove the CP and AA menu options as they couldn't work.

Hello guys, what about the MY2019?
I have the 10" screen with TouchPro version S19A and I am not able to connect the car to the Internet through my phone.
Is it possible to make the car search a Wi-Fi hotspot or do I need a data only micro SIM card?

Thanks!

Your car will need a SIM, but in my experience it doesn't have to be a data only one - I'm using a standard phone SIM and it seems to work just fine. That's in the UK, other markets may vary, of course. With the SIM you should be able to make a hotspot, but you may need a software update to activate it - mine's on S19C. Check under Connectivity and see if you have CarPlay, Android Auto and Hotspot options. I have, but CP and AA don't work on mine as it's MY18 with the 8" screen.

Actually, you should be able to connect either by getting a SIM (and data plan) for the car or using your phone as a Hotspot.
SCM is correct that a GSM phone SIM would work to connect the car directly (Jaguar's default is AT&T). Of course, it requires a data plan.
You also should be able to set up a Hotspot on your phone that the car can use.
If you set up the phone's Hotspot with a name, you can go through the ICTP Settings/All Settings screens for WIFI to search for the Hotspot.

If you're not streaming music/video into the car, its data needs are fairly nominal. I initially used a FreedomPop SIM on the F-Pace and it nicely stayed under the 200mb cap for a free plan. I now use CarPlay and piggyback off my phone's connection.
Technically, there is a slight connection advantage to using the car's system because of the integrated antenna. (And, you can also set the car up as a Hotspot and connect your phone to it.)

For sure, your ICTP software is several generations out of date. My F-Pace is at S21A 21.10.6-676616, although I'm not positive the release nomenclature is exactly the same across models.

There is no WiFi option in the connectivity settings... I need to put my iPhone nanosim in an adapter and try with that one.
Will keep you posted

Thanks!

I managed to fit a SIM card in the slot, it's correctly recognized and the 4G symbol appears.
But when I ask it to check for a software update, it says it's up to date.
I will go to the dealer and ask their help.

I wouldn't say it's finnicky - it's just that, like most modern cars, it needs a good supply of volts.

That's just simply untrue. The electrical system in the F-Type is a well-known issue. My car has personally been sitting in the shop for nearly a year for catastrophic electrical failure. The issue is that Jag decided to run every single electrical source through a single unit, and if there is a failure in one part of the system they have an extremely hard time diagnosing it.

That's interesting, in the three years I've had my F-Type it's had one electrical issue when a non-shutdown module ran the battery down. Nothing was done to fix it apart from recharging the battery and I've had no issues since. So it may be "well-known" to you, but it certainly isn't to me. Maybe the fault lies with the shop, not the electrics?

The latest is S20C1_20.48.3-635557, I believe it came out in December 2020.
