Default 2018/2019 Garage door opener (homelink)

Anyone know if the new style rear view mirror on the 2019 can be retro fitted on a 2018? My new 2018 SVR is not equipped with a homelink and I'd rather upgrade to the new style rear view mirror if I need a complete rear view mirror. Can the factory homelink be installed in the existing mirror?

Are all of the rear view mirrors with auto dim and homelink the same from 2014 to 2018? Has the rear view mirror been upgraded to have a better auto dim sensor from 2014 to 2018? I assume homelink can be added to a mirror with auto dim by simply replacing the rear view mirror with one which has homelink and auto dim. I also assume the homelink transmitter is contained in the mirror along side of the 3 buttoms. Can anyone help me out with this?

This is not a new question. To the best of my recollection the solution is more complicated than one would expect at first blush. But I defer to others with better memories.

Having said that I thank you profoundly for your post. I have a lowly MY 14 Base Vert and no home-link. I saw an SVR in the dealer's a couple months ago and it had the home-link option for $255 USD. You have to salute JLR. A $125,000+ car and they have the testicular fortitude to charge $255 for a feature that is expected as standard equipment on an econobox.

It's standard on an econobox as they have to over-option it to make anyone want to buy it. Jaguar, on the other hand, makes a beautiful car that's great to drive - what else would you want as standard? I personally would object to having included in the price an option I'd have no use for, so I'd turn your complaint around - why would Jaguar include as standard (and no doubt include in the price) options I don't want, and wouldn't pay for? It's all about choice, mate.

A homelink is extremely cheap for Jaguar to have not just included it. The manufacturing process cost is probably less expensive to make only one type and include it in the mirror than to make two types of mirrors. For the added cost of a couple of dollars I agree with Suaro. If I go to Morton's for a nice steak or even McDonald's for a cheap burger I don't expect to be charged extra for sauce or ketchup etc. I believe is was standard on the XK model and definitely should be on the SVR.

No Homelink on my 2010 XKR, so not standard on that MY.

Wow, I never realized it was not included in so many Jaguar cars. Shame on Jaguar for doing this--cheap, cheap, cheap.

I say good on Jaguar for making it an extra-cost option - I don't know anyone in my circle who needs one. There's enough electronics to go wrong as it is, without adding stuff I don't need.

I've never had a bad Homelink transmitter over 4 cars. (On one car I bought a HL console from eBay and it worked fine.) So I wouldn't be concerned about HL reliability.

+++++++++

Our father-in-law sold us a car equipped with HL. He never used it...just used the opener remote clipped to his visor.

The test is not whether Jaguar includes a homelink. The test is what is the standard in the industry, or even in the luxury car segment. I know MB and Volvo include it across the board at no additional charge. I have no idea (but a good guess) as to BMW and Audi.

I thought everything is an option on BMWs!
Homelink certainly isn't an industry standard in the UK, most people here use their garage as an overflow storage area - UK garages are generally very small.

Understood. I expect the percentage of Jaguar owners with detached homes with garages is higher in the US than in the UK. My UK contacts which admittedly are all in London live in attached dwellings without garages. On the other hand the general level of home ownership is higher in Canada than in the US. Here in the desert the amount of space devoted to garages is enormous because of the necessity of protecting vehicles from the harsh climate. But vehicle equipment normally reflects national patterns, and so maybe UK cars are appropriately delivered without home link whereas in Canada they should be. The magic is in knowing the difference. But having to use a remote to open a garage door is clearly a minor inconvenience compared to other issues.

JFTR, I invite you to look at the list of "Standard Features" on a BMW. Everything is far from optional. Even Porsche, which rumor has it charges for the air in the tires, includes home link in the standard equipment on the 911 in the US. JLR is just out to lunch on this one.
