Default 2021 exhaust

So I know people have randomly commented on here about the 2021 exhaust. I had a 15’ v6, 17 R and now the 21 R and I gotta say I’m really pissed at how muted and quiet the 21’ is. Yes it opens up after 3000rpms but it’s nowhere even close to the high activity of cracks and pops as my 17’ which was a beast, I now fully regret my 21’. Do you think this is permanent issue due to extra insulation they put in there or something?? Or is it something I can change by taking it to the dealer for a software update ? Cause if I can’t im trading this in once I line up another car. Very disappointed. The major selling point is that exhaust of years past and then boom, no heads up about it just shows up with a muted exhaust for a 116k tag

If that really bugs you enough to want to trade it in, how much of a hit are you going to have to take on the value vs. putting an aftermarket exhaust on the car ?

You didn't get to test drive before you purchased?
I got to test drive 2 cars a total of 102 miles at speed, then bought new from a different dealer.

The 'pops' are a function of ECM programming. You ain't going to get as 'badass' as you want by asking a dealer.

SEARCH for comments on the VAP Tune here. I believe that will meet your expectations. But, see how this could affect your warranty.

I was also very disappointed, if you want to to open up below 3000rpm you can put it in sport mode

Have they changed it for the new models? In my MY18 I have to use dynamic mode to get the valves to open early, sport mode doesn't affect the valves (except that it keeps the revs higher so 3,500 rpm is reached sooner).

Oh my bad, i didn't know the difference betw sports mode and dynamic mode; I meant the flat tab that you move down in the opposite direction of the snow/rain icon

Hah, the slightly tamer version of the V6 was one of the sole contributing factors of why I went with the 2021. The engine sound is of course fantastic on both current and previous models, just would rather it not be the default with every press of the gas lol. You should definitely keep the '21 though, maybe leave it in Sport Mode.

About the exhaust - I have no experience with the earlier models but talk of the valves staying closed below 3500 RPM on the '21 - that's not the case unless you don't push the button.

If you push the active exhaust button after you start the engine - nothing seems to happen but the valves open immediately when you put the car in gear.

The car does start up quietly, but you can remedy that. When you get in, hit start before you put your foot on the brake, the turn off stop-start and turn on exhaust, then put your foot on the brake and finally start the engine - it's glorious.

In other threads here about the 2021 model year exhaust system, there have been a couple of mentions that the sound with the valves open seems to increase a little as the engine accumulates some miles. Maybe the parts are breaking in, maybe it has something to do with the ECU "learning" the driver's habits ?
I think I would reserve judgement until the car has at least 1000 miles on the odometer.

I see you also had the 17 R, the same car I've been driving for over three years now. I know what you mean about loving the sound and being able to modulate the amount of crackle and pop from a few to a roaring machine-gun like effect ...like playing a musical instrument. Like you've heard by now, the crackle pop on overrun is ECU programing. I would maybe look into finding a way to keep the valves open at all times ( fuse or vacuum lines?) or possibly look into Velocityap systems. I personally would love to hear from someone on this forum who has installed one of their systems on the 8 cylinder R and what they think of it. BTW, I always drive in dynamic/sport mode.
Here is a link to their site. https://www.velocityap.com/product/j...g-sound-level/

Yes 2021 V8 is more quiet till 3.300 rpms, even if you switch on the exhaust valve, but over the 3.300 it sounds incredibly loud, with a lot of cracks and bangs. The downside is that you need to run over that rpm limit to get the roar sound. The good thing is that you can turn on the engine in silent mode. I like this double personality. Wait to get more miles , the sound will get louder.

I remember seeing some thread discussing the option of retofitting the catalytic converter of a model without the gasoline particle filter to bring back the old sound.
Unfortunately I cannot find the thread. Maybe someone has the link.

Doesn't dynamic mode do that?

I have that document too, and it doesn’t accurately describe the way mine works. No question that the valves are NOT open 100% of the time in dynamic on my car. (I don’t have switchable.) They flutter open/closed at idle (as evidenced by squeaking), and once under way, they open progressively when I put my foot down.

Having pulled F43 (and replacing it with a relay), very different (and louder) sound at low revs (and the instant I put my foot down) with F43 defeated and the valves actually open 100% of the time. Different than what others have described.

You may find this unacceptable for warranty considerations, but if you are looking for more sound I cannot stress enough how highly I recommend VelocityAP's 200 cell downpipes. The difference on my 2017 is ridiculous. Car now sounds as tremendous as it looks.

I have a 2021 and I can tell you for a fact that regardless whether you put the car in dynamic or just press the active exhaust button, under 3.5K the exhaust sound is 100% "limited". Only after 3.5K does it seem to fully open up. Now that being said, the exhaust does get a tiny bit louder when in dynamic mode or the exhaust button is selected but its such a small increase that I had to actually record the difference and play both one after another to notice the difference.

TLDR: Yes the exhaust button makes the exhaust a drop, and I mean a drop louder, but there is also something going on under 3.5K that is limiting the exhaust sound. I'm trying to find out how to get the full exhaust sound under 3.5K rpm that we get when going over 3.5k.
