Aftermarket TPMS exterior sensor on my winter tire setup
I figured I would share my positive experience with an aftermarket TPMS sensor kit -- which connects via Bluetooth to an app on my cell phone.
Found these 'caps' that replace your old stem caps that provide tire pressure monitoring and temperature. The app will warn you both verbally and by vibrating when you go below (or above) your preset pressure min/max. Also, if it detects a leak it will also sound an alarm.
I'm on day 2 of this and it seems to be a relatively easy to use interface and very easy to connect. The stem caps are a bit large but they don't look too bad since my wheels were powdercoated black. Also, it's winter in Canada -- the Jag is always dirty
so these caps are the least of my concern.
As you'll see from the screenshot -- looks like my psi's are off. Interestingly, when I had my winters mounted, there was a tech who did the fronts and a different tech on the rears. Looks like the guy in the front was overzealous.
For $60 Cdn, I think this was a good buy.

The OEM system seems to work just fine for me. Provides immediate warning alarm of catastrophic failure when the tire is ruptured, and provides a warning light when any of the tires falls below 31 PSI.
I probably should have been clearer. My winter set up doesn't have the OEM TPMS valves installed since they are mounted on aftermarket rims. So, I totally agree that the OEM sensors and alerts are 100% fine -- for the winter, my choices were to have no warnings or to buy something like this as an aftermarket fix.
Are any other than stock sensors that will work?
One of mine was replaced with a fresh factory sensor, that programmed itself. But at $90+
would use another less pricey name brand if possible.
The sensors are not just frequency dependent. Any old 433Mhz sensor will not work on my car. I have had luck with the OEMs only. It is possible that it is a specific system that can provide the actual analog tire pressure rather than the binary ok/low readout. In fact, the F-Type requires different TPMS sensors of the same frequency (433Mhz) depending on VIN. I can find OEMs for my car on eBay for $58-$75. Search 'worldwide'. The one's I have gotten came from the UK.
