I know I know, this will be a heresy, but I'm thinking about getting an F-Type V8, and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on aftermarket exhausts that will tone herdown a bit.

In the standard mode, they are rather quiet if you keep from putting your foot to the floor, except at startup.

 

Agreed. I just got my 2017 R on Monday and driving in standard mode is pretty reasonably quiet actually. Switch to dynamic mode and the exhaust baffles open up giving you noticeably more sound and a few burbles and pops. Kick the shifter over to S to unleash your inner hooligan with crackles and pops for days.

The F-Type is a bit schizophrenic - ranges from ***** cat to roaring beast. Your right foot's choice as to its behaviour.

 

its quiet as can be with the baffles closed, I don't think there is any way to make it quiet in dynamic mode.

 

Under what conditions do you want it quieter? Also, is it louder than you'd like for you, or for those outside?

I hate the sound the symposer pumps into the cabin, but that's trivial to fix.

 

I hated the symposer too lizzardo. It's a 10 minute fix max. The cabin sounds much better. But I'm 65 years old so I understand it's not for everyone.

 

Disabling, I'd put it at two minutes, maybe three the first time. Removing all that crap though ... I'd like it gone but it'd be a real pain and not worth it unless I had the engine already out.

I'm not 65, but not young. What I didn't like is the sudden switch to disembodied noise in the cabin. Engine noises should come from the front, exhaust noises from the back. Now, that's what I get.

 

I find this discussion about the symposer interesting.
I disabled/blocked mine a couple of years ago and I really couldn't tell any difference, it sounded exactly the same to me.
So I re-enabled/unblocked it and again zero difference.
All I can hear under the conditions where it is supposed to work (medium to heavy engine load and and plenty of right hoof) are the exhaust and the SC whine.
Maybe they are drowning out the symposer, maybe it never worked anyway, I dunno!

I have no explanation for your experience other than that it wasn't working to begin with. It's a night and day difference for me. A typical place I'd get it was a freeway merge on my commute. It's been some time but I think it was probably 4th gear (on the 6MT), maybe 3000rpm, half throttle. It'd accelerate moderately, as expected, then reach maybe 3500rpm and the sound would just switch on. When I first got the car I thought it was the exhaust valves opening, but after time I was able to distinguish the difference.

 

@lizzardo Do you think plugging/defeating the symposer will address highway drone? I will admit, I have the VAP exhaust but noticed the highway drone with the exhausts closed. Since it's a small job I'm might do a test, I'm just not as handy as everyone here.

 

I doubt it will change that, since the symposer only activates under moderate load and "highway drone" is cruising at light load.

Still, it's really easy and you might just like the sound better when under load. I do with the stock muffler. It might be less pronounced a change with the VAP. I don't know.
